William "Bill" George Vavul

July 12, 1926 — October 19, 2023

William "Bill" George Vavul, 97, of Dayton, OH, passed away on October 19, 2023. He was born on July 12, 1926, in Chicago, IL. Bill was outgoing and charismatic. He had a great sense of humor and loved a good joke; he had one for every occasion. He also loved to entertain kids and was well-known and well-loved for his disappearing-quarter trick.

Bill is survived by his son, Gary Vavul (Nancy); his daughters, Vicki Pentella and Pam Sears (Dan); his six grandchildren, Stacy (Gavin), Kelly, Ashley (Wesley), Katie, Jenny, and Scott; and four great-grandchildren, Connor, Theo, Zoe, and Winnie. He is also survived by his dear brother, Andy Vavul. Bill was preceded in death by his parents, George and Mary Vavul; his beloved wife of almost 57 years, Betty; and his sisters, Sue Ensley and Tulla Brooks.

Bill attended Amundsen High School in Chicago, IL, where he played football and sneaked out of class at every opportunity. He served honorably in the U.S. Army during World War II as a Photographic Interpreter in the Counterintelligence Corps.

After his military service, Bill and Betty married and moved to Dayton, OH, where Bill worked as a bartender and then went on to have a successful career as the General Manager of the Racquet Club and then, for 24 years, the Tropics Restaurant. In his free time, Bill enjoyed playing golf and gin rummy with his many dear friends. In fact, he was still looking for a worthy gin rummy opponent into his 90's.

We will miss him deeply.

His family would like to thank the many nurses and aides from Hospice of Dayton who rendered such compassionate care to Bill. We would especially like to thank Dixie for her patient kindness in helping to make sure our father received the appropriate care. And, Jessica, a hospice aide who formed a special bond with our father and provided him with some much-needed joy for the final months of his life.

A private service will be held to honor Bill's life. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Hospice of Dayton in his memory.
