William R. Gray, Jr.
Age 89, of Dayton, passed away Thursday, November 20, 2008, at Miami Valley Hospital.
He was born in Greenfield, Ohio on March 11, 1919.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Dorothy.
He is survived by one daughter & son-in-law, Candis & William Pees; one son & daughter-in-law, William R. III & Carey Gray; five grandchildren, Brady (Brooke), Katie, Josh (Rhea), Elizabeth & Emily; two great grandchildren, Austin & Megan; and by his extended family and many good friends.
He graduated from Ohio University in 1941 with a Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts and was a member of the Theta Chi Fraternity.
During WW II he served in the U. S. Army Air Corps.
Bill was a 62-year member of Grace United Methodist Church where he served in many capacities, including Head Usher, Administrative Board, Pastor Relations Committee, Past President of Grace Adventure Club, and active in Grace Couplets for over 40 years.
Bill made his living working as main Display Designer for Donenfeld's and as coordinator for all Convention Center events for Merchandise Displays.
Bill had an extensive career as a volunteer. In 1991 he was honored as Kettering's Citizen of the Year. He was Past President of Dayton Society of Painters & Sculptors, Past Chairman of Kettering Council of Community Relations, Past President of Kettering Sister Cities Association, committee member of Kettering Spass Nacht, and member of Dayton Rotary Club for over 20 years, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow. He was also an active volunteer at the Dayton Art Institute. In 2002 He was named as Kettering Kiwanis Citizen of the Year. Bill was a strong supporter of the Visual & Performing Arts all of his life. He will be remembered as being a great advocate of the Cities of Dayton & Kettering.
Memorial services will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 29, at Grace United Methodist Church, 1001 Harvard Blvd. @ Salem Ave, Dayton, Ohio 45406. Rev. Dr. Sherry Gale will officiate. The family will be receiving friends following memorial services in the church parlor. Interment will be at David Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Bill to the Grace Church Memorial Fund.
