William "Bill" Joseph Fortener met his creator whom he loved with his whole heart on December 12, 2019. He was born August 22, 1932, the fifth of nine children born to the late F. Ray and Carrie Tettman Fortener.
He was a graduate of Chaminade High School and the University of Dayton. Bill served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict and work most of his adult life as a controller. Bill was a charter member of St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Centerville where he served as a permanent deacon for fifteen years, a member of the St.Francis' Men's Club, and a lifetime member of the Falcon Club. He served as President of the St.Francis of Assisi Parish Council and was active in the Cursillo Movement since 1964 and the Kairos Prison Ministry since 1992. He was a continual blood donor, having a total of 23 gallons of blood.
In recent years, Bill was active at Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church in Fairborn and was a member of the Knights of Columbus there. Prior to his battle with cancer and cardiac disease, he served as Pastoral Associate at Mary Help where he routinely attended Mass.
In addition to his parents, Bill was preceded in death by his brothers, Lou and Don Fortener; sisters, Mary Fortener, Dolores Marucco, and Phyllis McEldowney; and step-daughter, Janet Adducchio.
Bill is survived by his wife of 27 years Dorathea; daughter Cathy Clauss (Brad) of Kettering; son Christopher (Lynne) of Unicoi, Tennessee; step sons, David (Robyn) Dunco, Douglas (Susan) Dunco, Donald Dunco; step-daughter Jill (Jeff) Snyder; step-son-in-law Paul Adducchio; seven grandchildren (Adam and Aaron Clauss, Gabrielle, Rachel , Joshua, Laurel, and Daniel Fortener) and sixteen step-grandchildren; sisters, Carol Pegg, Rosie Weinel; brother, Ray; sister-in-laws, Roz Fortener, Jo Fortener Ritzert; 31 nieces and nephews; and five step-great grandchildren; former wife, Sue Brezine; as well as a host of other family members and friends.
The family will receive friends on Tuesday, December 17, 2019 from 9:30am to 10:30 am at St. Francis of Assisi Catholic Church in Centerville, Ohio. A Mass of Christian Burial will begin at 10:30 am with Father Tom Schmidt and Father Isaac Chavez officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the St. Vincent DePaul Society, St. Francis of Assisi , Kairos of Ohio, or Mary Help of Christians Church.
