Wilfred Ernest Stanyon Jr.

Wilfred Ernest (Ernie) Stanyon Jr., 88, of West Carrollton, OH passed away on March 12, 2022 at his home. He was born on February 12, 1934 in Connelsville, PA to Wilfred Ernest Stanyon Sr. and Josephine E. (Burd) Stanyon. He grew up in Scottdale, PA where as a young man he earned his Red Cross Life Saving certification. He played football and lettered for East Huntington High School, graduating in 1951. He enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father and uncles in the rolling hills of PA. In 1951 he took his first sworn oath and joined the US Navy and proudly served aboard the Heavy Cruiser USS Columbus CA-74 as a Machinist Mate. He returned to civilian life in February 1955.

Returning to Scottdale, PA he met the love of his life, Sandra Lee (King) Stanyon and in October, 1957 he took his second oath, swearing to love and cherish Sandra in sickness and in health forever. As with all promises he made, he kept his word loving and cherishing Sandra until her passing January 5, 2021. No man has loved, or been more devoted to his wife.

Ernie always wanted the best for his family and wanted more than working a menial job in a steel mill. He worked hard and applied himself and was hired as an apprentice service technician for the National Cash Register (NCR) Corporation. His job entailed long travel days into Pittsburgh, PA and eventually he obtained Journeyman Status. He continued to work hard and excel in his trade. It was about this time Sandy and Ernie welcomed their first child Lori Jill (Stanyon) Leggett. His hard work paid off and he later accepted a promotion, moving to Dayton, OH. He became an instructor at the NCR CTEC (Central Technical Education Center). In Dayton, Sandy gave birth to their second child, son Todd Ernest Stanyon. Ernie worked hard and built his family a brand new home in Miami Township. He progressed into upper management at NCR CTEC. Ernie retired after 37 years at NCR. Ernie was very proud of his time there and made many lifelong friends.

Not complacent to sit at home after retiring he took on a part-time maintenance position at a local hotel. Once again he proved his invaluable nature and received an employee of the year award, of which he was very proud. Like everywhere he went he made more lifelong friends.

Ernie and Sandra loved going on cruises and sailed all over the world seeing amazing sights. They looked amazing and happy in their formal ship's photos with smiles from ear to ear. Their family loved to hear them regale tales of these adventures with those same smiles.

One of Ernie's favorite past times were classic cars. He got his own cruiser, a 1967 Chevy Impala dubbed "Plain Jane". He loved to attend cruise-ins where he enjoyed every award or plaque he received. Of course, he made more dear lifelong friends (proudly called his car buddies) and couldn't wait till spring to get out and cruise.

Of course, his greatest unwavering love was that of his family. He was the most loving and doting husband and father that could ever be. His love and support of his children was immeasurable, as was his love and pride of his grandson Jared Leggett, wife Sara and their beautiful daughter, Abigale. No man has beamed more than he did when spending time with Abigale. He was the quintessential husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and friend.

He loved animals, especially his ever present canine companion Maecy. His family jokingly referred to her as his youngest daughter and princess of the house. She provide him with comfort and loving companionship after Sandra's passing.

He was preceded in death by his parents, several aunts, uncles and cousins and his dear wife.

Ernie is survived by his daughter Lori (Stanyon), her husband Gale Leggett; grandson Jared Leggett, granddaughter-in-law Sara Leggett and great granddaughter Abigale Leggett. He is also survived by his son, Todd Ernest Stanyon and his partner Kristan (Kiki) Brickler. In addition he has several surviving nieces and nephews.

To all that knew him, he will be deeply missed and leave a myriad of happy memories to be cherished forever.

In lieu of flowers or gifts, donations in his name can be made to a local humane society or animal rescue.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, March 24, 2022 from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm at the Newcomer Funeral Home- South Chapel, located at 3940 Kettering Blvd. Kettering, OH 45439. He will be interred at the Dayton National Cemetery in Dayton, Ohio, with his loving wife at a date to be determined in the future. Ernie was immensely proud of his service to his country in the United States Navy and will receive full military honors
