Wilford G. Shields

January 5, 1930 — April 23, 2021

Wilford G. "Willie" Shields, 91, a longtime resident of West Union, WV departed this life on Friday, April 23, 2021 in Dayton, OH. He was born in Shirley, WV on January 5, 1930, a son of the late Harvey Gail and Ruby Ruth Main
Shields.

He married Setsuko "Rosie" Yoshimura Shields on February 4, 1957 in Chiba, Japan. They were married for 53 loving years until she preceded him in death on December 30, 2010.

Wilford is survived by two daughters, Ruby Yoshi Shields-Tone and husband Hideo of Chandler, AZ and Rika Cassidy and husband Kevin of Kettering, OH; four grandchildren, Adam, Caitlin, Sean and Brian Cassidy; two sisters, Mildred Marie Costilow and husband Ernest of West Union, WV and Garnet Louise Shahan of Pennsboro, WV; former brother-in-law, Bill Hoskinson of Clarksburg, WV; and many other loving family and friends.

In addition to his parents and loving wife, Wilford was preceded in death by his two brothers, Herman Leon Shields and wife Sheila of Clarksburg, WV and Joe Lee Shields and wife Norma Jean of Parkersburg, WV; and brother-in-law,
John Shahan.

After graduating from Doddridge County High School in 1949, Wilford enlisted in the U.S. Army and proudly served his country in the Korean War. During this time, he served in the medical field until his retirement as the rank of Sergeant in 1958. After leaving the military, Willie and Rosie resided in Philadelphia, PA from 1958 to 1969. While there he worked at the Roll ing Hills Hospital, VA Hospital and Trimfit Hosiery Co.. In the spring of 1969, he moved his family to his home state of West Virginia where he later retired as head custodian after 20 years of dedicated service with Doddridge County High School.

Willie enjoyed hunting, but even more, he just enjoyed watching the birds and deer graze in his own backyard in the hills of WV. He also loved his chickens and was so proud of the great brown eggs they produced. Willie loved watching
sports and was an avid Mountaineers fan. He was always ready to deal out the cards and play a hand of rummy if you were up for that.

Anyone who knew Wilford, knew he was the type of person who would give you the shirt off of his back. Most of all, he was a devoted husband, father, grandfather and brother. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

A private burial will be held at a later date at the Dayton National Cemetery where Wilford will be laid to rest together with his beloved wife, Setsuko.
