Wayne Asplund, age 83, of Vandalia, formerly of Hawthorne, CA, passed away January 29, 2022. He was born October 10, 1938 in Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada and lived most of his life in California.
Wayne was preceded in death by his wife, Anne Asplund; and daughter-in-law, Darcy Asplund.
Wayne is survived by his two sons: Drew (Sue) and Mitch Asplund; 5 grandchildren: Drew (Sam), Lacy (Rob), Tabitha (Jose), Jeremy and Joshua (Lynn); 5 great-grandchildren; brothers: Larry (Lourdes)Asplund and Kirk Asplund; sisters: Lois (Gary) Clark and Bonna; special friends: Kelly Asplund, Dee Tupper, Julia Cleary and Daniel; many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Wayne was a longtime truck driver and a small business owner for over 40 years at Master Re-Pointing Service. He played semi-professional baseball during the 40's and 50's, but most of his life, he was on the U.S. curling team. He loved being a baseball coach and teaching the younger generation more about the sport he loved. He was ranked 3rd in the World and 2nd in the United States as a baseball coach. During the off-season and spring training, he enjoyed playing baseball with his son, Mitch. He and his son, Drew, went through baseball tryouts together, and during the baseball strike, he was able to watch Drew get drafted by the Toronto Blue Jays. Wayne continued to play baseball with Mitch and the other players until he was 69.
