Vernelle B. Russell

July 24, 1924 — October 6, 2021

Vernelle Bidlack Russell, 97, of the Mt. Pleasant Ohio Living community in Monroe, Ohio, passed away on October 6, 2021 after a remarkably healthy and loving life with her family at the center of every part of it.

Vernelle was born July 24, 1924 in Parkman, Ohio, where she grew up on a farm with loving parents and two siblings. Her family lived through the Great Depression but they never went hungry thanks to her hard-working parents. She had many wonderful childhood memories of her family on the farm.

Vernelle graduated from Parkman High School in 1942. She attended Warren Business College and Bowling Green State University. She worked for the Warren City Board of Education and the Polson Rubber Company as an administrative assistant. She married Edward Heinold in 1946. They lived in Newton Falls on a large farm where they raised their four children. Edward passed away in 1960 and Vernelle raised the children as a single mom with help from family and friends. She married Myron (Cy) Russell from Lorain, Ohio in 1966.

She and Cy loved working together on genealogy and developed detailed histories. They traveled to 48 states in their motorhome with Vernelle writing daily logs of their trips. She also kept memorabilia throughout her children's lives and made a personal book for each of them to cherish. Her soulmate and wonderful father to her children, Cy, passed away in 2009 after 42 years of happy marriage.

Vernelle attended the Lighthouse United Methodist Church in Lorain and volunteered at the Ladies Auxiliary in Lorain Hospital.
Family and friends were always important to Vernelle and she enjoyed keeping in touch -- she was the family's "information central" and kept everyone connected. She was known for sending lovely cards with very thoughtful handwritten notes in the most beautiful cursive writing. She was blessed to have close relationships with her family including her caring cousins and her wonderful neighbors in Newton Falls, Lorain, and the Ohio Living Lake Vista and Mt. Pleasant communities.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Forrest and Edith Bidlack; her brother, Forrest (Rollin) Bidlack; her sister, Lucille Bidlack Lewis; her husbands, Edward Heinold and Myron (Cy) Russell; and her son, Jeffrey Heinold. She is survived by her daughters, Joyce Anderson (Jim) and Jayne Funari (Nick); and her son, Jim Heinold (Debbie). She is also survived by five grandchildren and nine great grandchildren. She will be truly missed by all.

A private family graveside ceremony will be held at a later date in Parkman, Ohio, where her two husbands were buried.

If desired, donations may be made to St. Jude's Children's Hospital, the American Cancer Society or the Hospice of Dayton, Ohio.
