Thomas Travis

January 24, 1946 — November 21, 2014

Thomas Matthew Travis, PT, PhD, MD, 68, of Piqua, returned home to his Creator November 21, 2014 at 10:35 a.m. while in Heartland of Piqua Nursing Home. He was born in New Orleans, La., on Jan. 24, 1946, to Thomas M. and Evy Lee Travis. The family moved to Chicago in 1948. Thomas was lovingly called "Junior" at home. Most people in Dayton and Piqua knew him by his preferred name given to him by his YMCA friends, "Dr. T."

Thomas graduated from Tilden Tech High School in Chicago in 1963. He attended Southern Illinois University, where he majored in Physical Education, continuing on to the University of Iowa, where he specialized in Physical Therapy and received a PhD in Adapted Physical Education and Rehabilitation in 1975. He was a member of the first graduating class of the Wright State University School of Medicine in 1980.

Thomas retired to write, and some of his writings have been placed in vertical file number 2348 at the Piqua Public Library in the local history section.

Thomas worked as a Physical Therapist at Wilson Memorial Hospital in Sidney, followed by jobs in Troy, Piqua and Springfield. He worked as a Physician for B.F. Lee Health Care Center at Central State University in Ohio, worked for Planned Parenthood, providing medical care, headed a Drug Rehabilitation program called Project Cure, and did physical screenings for General Motors all located in Dayton.

In addition to his parents, Thomas was also preceded in death by his sister, Florence Strickland; his nephew, Marlin Mitchell; and his partner's parents, Chester and Priscilla Deane.

Thomas is survived by his loving Life Partner, Marjorie W. Deane; his brother, Larry Travis (Joanne); his sisters, Estolla Porter and LeeAnna Anthony (Jerry) all of Chicago, Ill.; his sisters-in-law, Barbara Deane (Carlos Gil) of Seattle, Wash., Helen Sharpe of Piqua; and brothers-in-law, Arther Deane (Betty) of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada and Nelson Deane (Linda) of Santa Clara, Calif. He is survived by nieces and nephews: Rosalyn Porter, Andre Porter, Demetrius Travis, Jennifer Davis, B.J. Davis, Beth Deane, Katherine McCoy, Chad Shearer, Julia Cruz and John Deane, and a host of relatives and friends.

Since Thomas considered nature as his church, anyone who wishes to share in a celebration of his life can gather at Roadside Park on Route 66 north of Piqua where the bike path turns to travel along the river. Dr. T. used to sit there on a tree stump to write. The gathering will be Saturday, Nov. 29 at 1:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be sent to YMCA, c/o Jim McMaken, 223 W. High St., Piqua, OH 45356 or to the Piqua Public Library, A and D Fund, 116 W. High St., Piqua, OH 45356.
