Thomas Joseph Spitzig

March 11, 1926 — March 6, 2023

Thomas J. Spitzig, Husband, Father, Grandfather and Friend to a great many, passed away on March 6, 2023. Age 96. Tom was preceded in death by his Father Joseph and Mother Lela Unger. Beloved husband of the late Barbara (Nurrenbrock), cherished father of the late Jane (the late Randy) Burnett, Susan (Robert) Davis, Timothy (Laura) and Matthew. Special friend to Joseph Ambrosi. Also survived by grandchildren Stephanie (Ryan) Bancroft and Brian Spitzig. He was also predeceased by his grandson Shane Bolyard and brother Dale (Elaine) Spitzig.

Born in Dayton, Ohio and attended Our Lady of Mercy Grade School, Chaminade High School and the University of Dayton. Immediately after high school he was drafted in the Army where he served honorably for two years. Tom saw action in the South Pacific with the 6th Infantry Division where he was awarded two bronze Battle Stars for his company's efforts in the Phillipines during 219 consecutive days of combat on Luzon.

After World War II, he began a lengthy professional career in management and public relations for firms such as Dayton Daily News, Liberal Markets, McCall's, St. Regis, American Standard, A&P Supermarkets and American Income Life Insurance. At McCall's, he rose from Employment Manager to Manager of the Pattern Division, finally serving as Assistant to the President and General Manager. Also active in the Dayton Jaycees and lifelong member of the Knights of Columbus. Throughout his professional career and community involvement he mentored many people.

Active in retirement, he continued to work for 13 years at McCarthy and Associates in Michigan, which specialized in fundraising for Catholic Church Parishes. During this time he became friends with Cardinals Maida and Szoka. Upon returning to Dayton, he served at Carillon Historical Park, Newcomer Funeral Home and Routsong Funeral Home. He was a longtime UD Basketball fan, season ticket holder for over 60 years at all three locations - Fairgrounds, Field House and Dayton Arena.

Always cheerful and noted for his positive outlook on life. If you encountered him on the street, you can be sure that you would get a friendly greeting. More importantly, Tom was truly interested in you and what was going on in your life. A "people person" if there ever was one! Perhaps that's why he had a long and successful life. He will be sorely missed.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Thursday, May 18, 2023 at 11 am at Incarnation Catholic Parish (55 Williamsburg Lane, Dayton, OH 45459). The family will receive friends from 10 am until the time of service.

To honor his memory donations may be made to Ohio's Hospice of Dayton.
