Thomas E. Hughes, 73, of Beavercreek, passed away early morning, Thursday, February 3rd at his home. Thomas was born August 8, 1948, in Macon, Georgia, to late parents, Herbert Clay and Evelyn Jane (Waldrip) Hughes of Cordele, Georgia. Thomas is survived by his wife of 51 years, Cathy (Cline) Hughes; son, Thomas L. Hughes (Nicola Clark); daughter, Tammie L. Hughes; sister, Janice (Donny) Sapp; brother, Herbert (Bernice) Hughes; brother-in-law, David (Brenda) Cline; 5 grandchildren: Ashley Soto Ramos, Erinn Hughes, Brianna McLaughlin, Brittany McLaughlin and Adam Hughes; 6 great grandsons: Xavier, Isaiah, Lorenzo, Cartier, Maverick and Asher and 3 step-great grandchildren: Erick, Alessandro and Giovanni; two nephews and two nieces. Thomas graduated in 1966 from Crisp County High School, Cordele, Georgia and attended Sinclair Community College, Dayton, Ohio.
Thomas served in the United States Air Force for 4 years in the Air Force Communications Service. He received commendations of National Defense Medal and Air Force Outstanding Unit Award. He was employed by Hilltop Concrete in Fairborn, Ohio as a ready mix driver, then for the US Postal Service where he served until his retirement in April, 1996 on medical disability. He also worked at Factory Lighting in Beavercreek and Chick-fil-A in Washington Township for a while after his retirement. Thomas was an active member of Community United Methodist Church, serving several years as the church's treasurer and leader of Bible Study on Sunday mornings. Thomas enjoyed watching football, bowling, traveling in the family RV and spending time with his family - especially the grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held on Monday February 14, 2022 at 11:00 am at Community United Methodist Church (339 Meyer Avenue, Dayton, Ohio 45431). Thomas will be laid to rest following the service at Mt. Zion Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends after the graveside service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks donations be made to Community United Methodist Church or Heartland Hospice.
