Theodore V. Welch, age 91, of Dayton, OH passed away on May 31, 2020, at V.A. Medical Center- Lakeside after an extended illness due to Agent Orange. Ted was born on August 20, 1928, in Orlando, FL. He was the son of Theodore and Beatrice (Edwards) Burgess.
While attending Wilberforce University in the ROTC program, Ted met Frances Dawson - Finley who was attending Central State University at the time. The two would later marry on June 30, 1951, at the Second Baptist Church in Akron, OH. To their special union, one son was born, Theodore L. Welch.
On March 16, 1951, in Ft. Campbell, KY, Ted began his 23 year career serving his country in the United States Army. During this time he fought in the Korean Conflict and later in the Vietnam War. As a result of his service in Vietnam, he was awarded the Vietnam Service Medal; Vietnam Campaign Medal; Good Conduct Medal; and the National Defense Service Medal. In 1968, Ted was fighting in the Tet Lunar New Year Offensive where he earned the Bronze Star. Ted's military career would take him and his family all over the world including Germany where their son, Ted, was born. He would spend the last 3 1/2 years of his career in Ft. Richardson, AK. He received an Honorable Discharge for his service to his country on June 9, 1972.
Ted was an active member of the Shiners and a member of the Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc.. He served various positions at his church, Chapel #2 and Paige Manor on Wright Patterson Air Force Base. He was also a member of the Postal Union.
Along with his loving wife Frances, Ted leaves behind his son, Theodore "Ted" L. (wife Cheryl) Welch of Springboro, OH; granddaughter, April L. Welch of Philadelphia, PA; grandson, Sheraton "Eddie" E. Welch of Phoenix, AZ; special niece, Kathleen Beard of Chicago, IL; nieces, Gayle Hill of Chicago, IL, Pamela Welch of Los Angeles, CA and Anissa Welch of Chicago, IL; nephew, Mark Carver of Chicago, IL; and aunt, Mattie Welch of Austin TX.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Alvin D. Welch.
Visitation will be held Thursday, June 4, 2020, from 9:00 am to 10:30 am at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, North Dayton Chapel. Funeral services, including full military honors, will immediately follow the visitation at 10:30 am with Rev. Ernest C. Brown, Sr., Pastor; Rev. Vannetta L. Bellows; and Chaplain, Major, Marcus L. Branch, USAF officiating. Private burial will take place in the Dayton National Cemetery.
