Thelma "Kathy" Rice, a beloved figure in her community, passed away peacefully on April 1, 2025, in Dayton, Ohio, at the age of 91. Born on September 11, 1933, in Monterey, Tennessee, Kathy was a beacon of love and warmth, known for her caring spirit and vibrant personality, which bore a charming stubbornness and an endearing ornery streak.
Kathy dedicated much of her life to her community, serving as a longtime member and devoted volunteer at the Northridge Freewill Baptist Church in Dayton. Here, she earned the affectionate nickname of “sweet potato girl,” a testament to her culinary skills, particularly her signature dish which she lovingly prepared for various special church events. Her unwavering commitment to her faith and her church community reflected her generous nature.
A devoted family woman, Kathy took immense joy in nurturing her yard and planting flowers, finding solace and satisfaction in the beauty that surrounded her. She was a cherished matriarch, showing her love throughout the years by ensuring that every child received a gift from her during the Christmas season. Her kindness extended not only to her family but also to all those who crossed her path, and she was deeply loved by many for the light she brought into their lives.
Kathy is survived by her sister, Betty Sue Barnes, and her brother, Dewey (Violet) Rice. She leaves behind a legacy celebrated by multiple nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, and great-great-nieces and nephews, all of whom carry forward the love and lessons she imparted.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Monroe Greene Rice and Betty Catherine Rice, as well as her siblings Gene, Stella, Juanita, Fay, and Don.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, April 12, 2025 from 10-11am at the Northridge Freewill Baptist Church, 4800 Payne Ave, Dayton, OH 45414. The service will follow at 11am. Kathy will be laid to rest at Forest Hills Memorial Garden, Tipp City, OH.
