Shirley Rae Filson

Shirley Filson, age 88, longtime resident of Xenia, OH, passed away on February 3, 2025, in Oakwood, OH. Shirley was born in Peoria, IL on September 8, 1936 to Francis and Ethel Cowen. Shirley is survived by her children, Linda DeLawder of Wilmington, Cristi McClellan of Kettering, Lori (Tom George) Filson and Mark Filson both of Centerville; brother, James (Donna) Cowen of Phoenix, AZ; grandchildren, Sandy DeLawder, Elizabeth DeLawder, Ryan (Briauna) Lopez-McClellan, Wesley McClellan, Alexa McClellan, Jack Filson and Katie Filson; great-grandchildren, Johnny and Justin DeLawder and Elena Lopez-McClellan; and numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband, Paul Filson; son-in-law, Danny DeLawder; grandson, Jeremiah DeLawder; siblings, Arlene (Lewis) Anderson and Doris (Alonzo) Doss.

Shirley retired from Kroger after 33 years. She then worked part-time at Xenia Christian Academy and enjoyed volunteering at Homefull in Dayton during her retirement years. Shirley was a member of Bible Baptist Church, Xenia, OH, where for many years she served as a Sunday School teacher, sang in the choir and worked in the bus ministry.

Shirley will be remembered for her generous spirit and love for others, always willing to lend a helping hand. Shirley kept active with many hobbies and interests including sewing, gardening, and hosting family and friends in her home. She took pride in maintaining her beautiful flower gardens. Playing board games, completing jigsaw puzzles and crosswords, and reading her Bible and other books all brought her joy. Even as her memory failed her, Shirley loved reading to her fellow residents in the Magnolia Trails unit at Wellington of Dayton. Her feisty spirit and quick wit kept her family and caregivers smiling. Shirley will be greatly missed by all who knew her. It is a comfort to know she is now in Heaven, undoubtedly singing praises to her Saviour.

Family will receive visitors on Saturday, February 15, 2025 from 11:30 am-1:00 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home - Beavercreek Chapel, 3380 Dayton-Xenia Rd, Beavercreek, OH 45432. A memorial service officiated by Dr. David McClellan will begin immediately following the visitation.

The family sincerely thanks the caring staff at Wellington of Dayton, Brookdale Oakwood, and DayCity Hospice for their exceptional care of Shirley until Jesus called her home. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to DayCity Hospice.
