Shirley Joanne Berrie, 82, of Dayton, Ohio passed away on October 7, 2022. She was born November 17, 1939 in Clear Lake, Iowa to parents Georg Andreas and Sigrid Lien.
She graduated from Clear Lake High School in 1957 where she excelled as Student Council Vice-President, Cheerleader, Yearbook Editor, and Homecoming Queen. She attended Mason City Junior College in 1958 where she was the Student Council Secretary-Treasurer and again, Homecoming Queen.
Shirley left school and married David Berrie in 1958 and they remained married for 62 years. She and David moved to Dayton, Ohio, then shortly afterwards to Fairborn, where they raised 5 children. As the kids progressed through school, she volunteered to be a Girl Scout Troop Leader in the mid 70's and also served as a Cookie Captain. For many years the garage was annually piled with cases of Girl Scout Cookies for all the troops in South Fairborn.
Shirley resumed her college studies and graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Education in 1976 from Wright State University and began teaching 2nd Grade at Palmer Elementary School in Fairborn. In 1980 she completed her Masters Degree in Education from Wright State University and continued to teach at Palmer and East Elementary School in Fairborn.
In 1988, she and David moved from Dayton to Alamogordo, New Mexico. She began teaching English as a Second Language at the New Mexico State University – Alamogordo. She also taught homebound students enrolled at Alamogordo High School.
In 1992, Shirley and David moved to Santa Clarita, California. She renovated much of the house and garden and experienced many adventures such as movie shoots in the neighborhood, the Northridge Earthquake, and local landslides and wildfires.
In 2002, she and David moved to Richmond, Indiana where they were active in Richmond Friends of the Library and the New Paris Catholic Church. They tended their 11 acre property as a woodlot and a garden.
Shirley had many interests throughout the years. She taught herself baking, cooking, sewing, knitting, beading, needlepoint, embroidery, photography, basketry and macrame. She loved to grow plants and play cards, especially bridge. She was an avid camper, hiker, swimmer and fisher. She always encouraged her grandchildren to discover the natural world around them and learn about insects, plants and animals.
Shirley is survived by her sisters Jane, Joyce, and Nancy, brother Michael, sons John (Myong Suk), Jeffery (Lynn), daughters Janet (Stephen), Joan, Julie (Scott), 10 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband David, and brothers William, George Jr., and Sterling.
