Sherrill Burnetta Hemmig, of Dayton, Ohio, passed away on Saturday evening, December 31st, after an extended illness.
Sherrill was born in Miami County, Indiana on February 2, 1933 to Floyd B. and Edna (Dillon) Hemmig, who preceded her in death. Sherrill was the second of eight children and was preceded in death by one older brother Philip B. Hemmig of Rockville, Md. and a younger brother, F. Gene Hemmig of Beavercreek, Ohio.
She is survived by a daughter, Joan (Gary) Caldwell of Terre Haute, Indiana; a sister, Diane (Larry) Kerkhove of League City, Texas; and brothers Richard Hemmig of West Lafayette, Indiana;, Robert Hemmig of Beavercreek, Ohio; Thomas Hemmig, of LaPorte, Indiana; and William (Donna) Hemmig, of Plymouth, Indiana. She is survived as well by sisters-in-law Cynthia (Chapman) Hemmig of Beavercreek, Ohio and Marilyn (Lyons) Hemmig of Maryland. Sherrill also had many nephews and nieces and one grandson, Brandon Caldwell.
Sherrill spent most of her childhood in LaPorte County, Indiana, where she excelled in artistic endeavors, winning prizes in oration and acting in local dramas. She was a gifted singer and as a pianist, she was able to play many complex pieces by ear after a single hearing. Sherrill also drew and painted marvelously.
Sherrill worked as a telephone operator for many years in the Washington, D.C. area, taking advantage there of the cultural and artistic entertainment the city offered as a way of continuing her interest in the arts. She worked as an international operator for AT&T until she retired. She enjoyed her work and was very loyal to her company.
Though Sherrill spent the last several years of her life in assisted living settings, she was a valued part of those communities and entertained others with her music. Sherrill was a good friend to many other residents and staff. She retained a good sense of humor to the very end
.
Visitation for Sherrill will be at Newcomer funeral home, 3380 Dayton-Xenia Road in Beavercreek, Ohio at 10 A.M., Thursday, January 5th. Funeral service will take place at Newcomers at 11 A.M., followed by burial at Valley View Memorial Gardens in Xenia.
The family requests no flowers be sent, but persons may offer memorial gifts to the ALS foundation or hospice.
