Samuel Meharry Bower
81, of Huber Heights passed away Tuesday May 29, 2012 at Hospice of Dayton. He was born July 4, 1930 in Davie, FL and graduated from Ft. Lauderdale H.S. He is survived by Patricia, his wife of 58 years, daughters Robin (Thomas) Fleming, Mackenzie and Liam of Wellington, FL and Ginger Bower (Patrick Downes), Olivia and Grant of Los Angeles, CA.
He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force for one year and later served three years as First Lt. and Company Commander, radar maintenance officer of the Signal Corps in the Army of the United States.
He met and married Patricia while both were students in Mexico, D.F. He graduated with a B.A. cum laude in Psychology from Mexico City College. Interning as a V.A. Clinical Psychology Trainee in 1959, he obtained a Ph.D. in Psychology from Vanderbilt University in 1963. Granted a NIMH Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, he worked with James Olds, Ph.D of the U of Michigan, Ann Arbor. After working as a Research Psychologist at the Aero-medical Research Laboratory, WPAF Base, he was employed as a Research Psychologist in the Behavior Research Laboratory, Antioch College, Yellowsprings, OH. Joining the faculty at the U of Dayton in 1965, he served as Chairman of the Dept. of Psychology from 1967 until 1972. He continued as full-time faculty, actively teaching at the University through August 2011. His passion was Information Theoretics.
