Roy Morgan Lively, age 99, passed away on December 26, 2016, surrounded by family. Roy was born to Roy and Cleona Morgan Lively on May 26, 1917 in Huntington, WV. Roy grew up in Huntington and Ronceverte, WV and graduated from Huntington High School.
He began working for Sydney L Day after high school as a draftsman, and some of his original drawings are on display in Marshall University's library. While developing his love of architecture, he met Barbara Likens Lively. They were married in June of 1940. They left Huntington for Beckley, WV, and Roy even worked in Alaska for a time as a draftsman before he and Barbara moved to Dayton in April 1943, where he worked at Wright Patterson Air Force Base as a draftsman for the war.
After the war ended, he attracted the attention of Doug Lorenz of Lorenz and Williams who invited him to become a draftsman at their firm. Eventually, after much work and dedication, his love of architecture led him to become a licensed architect and senior partner of Lorenz and Williams, where he worked for 37 years, retiring in 1982. During his career his projects included many Dayton landmarks including Rike's parking garage, Winters Tower and the renovation of the Old Post Office. He was a president of the Architects Society of Ohio, the Dayton Chapter of AIA and the Construction Specifications Institute.
Roy was an active member of his church, Fairmont Presbyterian, where he helped build the then young church. He was also a member of the Engineers Club, City Club, Racquet Club, Dayton Country Club, Rotary and Criterion. Roy also enjoyed traveling, golf, bowling and classic cars.
Roy was a loving, dedicated husband of 74 years to Barbara, and his love of family led him to make a recent move to CA, where he lived in a household of 4 generations. He will always be remembered for his sweetness, his quick smile and his love of telling jokes.
Roy was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved wife, Barbara; his brother-in-law, Ed Likens; and his nephew, Bart Likens. He is survived by two daughters, Sara L. Illman (Robert S) of California and Anne L. Leeper (Robert C) of Arizona; his sister-in-law Marci Likens of Florida; 5 grandchildren: Tracy I. Jarvis (Rick), Robert M. Illman (Elizabeth), David K. Illman (Sarah), Sara I. Smith (Philip), and Tiffany M. Frank (Dakota) as well as 13 great grandchildren.
Funeral services will be held at Woodland Cemetery Chapel on January 5, 2017 at 11am with entombment to follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
