It is with both sadness and a smile that we announce the passing of Ronald G. Mainard, age 84, who passed from this life on October 8, 2024 in Beavercreek, Ohio. He was born in Arkohm, Oklahoma on September 25, 1940 to Raymond Mainard and Betty Gould. Ron was preceded in death by his parents, his long-term partner Patty Brown, his son Dennis Mainard, and his niece Courtney. Ron is survived by his daughter Denise Miller (Andrew), his son Stephen Mainard (daughter Evangeline), his brother Douglas Mainard (Kathleen), and his nephew Adam Mainard.
Ronald was a man whose boundless curiosity, love for stray animals, and quick wit made the world a more colorful and entertaining place. He was the kind of kid who explored every corner of his surroundings, often bringing home stray dogs, cats, and even a few bewildered neighbors wondering where their pets had gone.
As an adult, Ronald’s adventurous spirit only grew. He was a loving father and loved his partner, Patricia Brown, who was his devoted companion of over 45 years. She became an important part of his life and family. Together, they shared laughter, joy, and many memorable moments, especially during holiday seasons.
Ronald’s home was filled not only with love and laughter but also the scent of his favorite treats. He had an insatiable sweet tooth, especially for chocolate and oatmeal raisin cookies. And anyone who knew Ronald knew that no holiday was complete without a hefty slice of fruitcake—often to the amusement (and sometimes confusion) of his family.
A self-made man, Ronald started working in various capacities at the age of 10. He worked in retail for many years and ultimately successfully ran his own commercial janitorial business, but his true passions lay in literature, film, and the animals he cared for over the years. British comedies like Fawlty Towers and Are You Being Served? were household staples, with Sunday evenings always reserved for Masterpiece Theatre. His favorite authors—J.R.R. Tolkien, Douglas Adams, and many more—shaped his playful worldview, which he shared generously with his children.
Ronald was a man of many quirks and much humor, a lover of old movies, fascinating documentaries, and lively family gatherings where his laughter was as warm as the cookies fresh from the oven. His legacy of joy, humor, and a good story lives on in his children, grandchildren, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Special thanks to the staff at Brookdale of Kettering and the staff at Suncrest Hospice for all their caring and support during the last years of his life. Though Ronald has passed on, we’re sure he’s somewhere indulging in a chocolate bar, debating the finer points of a British sitcom, and—of course—sneaking a bite of fruitcake. His life was sweet in every sense of the word, and we’ll carry his joy and humor with us always. In his memory, the family asks that you laugh a little louder today, and enjoy your favorite treat.
