Robert Guy, affectionately known as "Big Daddy," "Bobby," "Bob," "Bubba," and "Papa," age 94 of Dayton, passed away Saturday, December 2, 2023 at home. He was born on November 10, 1929 in Gainesville, Alabama to the late Sam and Rose Guy. In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his lovely wife of 58 years, Clora Ceretha (Watkin); son, Robert Goodson; stepdaughter, Marion LaVerne Watkins; grandson, Darrion Lee; and sister, Bertha Northfleet "BaeGuy".
Robert is survived by his children: Albert Yarbrough of Atlanta, Georgia; Jimmie Ware of Hazel Park, Michigan; Charles Lackings of Dayton, Ohio; David (Ava) Guy of Hinesville, Georgia; LaShonda Guy-Gibbons of LaVergne, Tennessee; Sherita Guy of Dayton, Ohio; SheRon Guy of Dayton, Ohio; and Tiffany Long of Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was the oldest of his siblings: sister, Marie "Bunch" Washington; brother, Raymond "Abe" Guy; brother, Sam "Red" Guy Jr.; sister, Lizzie "Liz" King; and brother, Leonard "BaeSon" Guy. Special mention: two nieces, Darlene Watkins and Gloria Jean Guy-Robinson; two nephews, DeWayne "Bitty" Watkins and Roderick "Butterball" Watkins; and a close friend, "Roundtree" who shared the passion of riding and talking about motorcycles. Robert was blessed with 27 grandchildren and 47 great-grandchildren. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.
Having to work in the fields in the south as a youth made it difficult for Robert to complete his education, resulting in him having to drop out of school at an early age. He worked odd jobs around town and eventually decided to move north to Dayton, Ohio with relatives. Robert was a man of many talents and found his "niche" as a skilled cement mason. He traveled the United States, laying cement foundations for major corporations, department stores, and homes. The "Guy" was so skilled at pouring and laying cement and blocks that he single-handedly built the extension to his home to include a three-car garage. Robert was an artist and enjoyed drawing cartoons, newspaper characters, and outdoor scenic sights. He was a "country boy" and an outdoorsman who loved to hunt. Robert enjoyed riding and talking about motorcycles, especially Harley-Davidson's, with his brothers and buddies. He truly enjoyed listening to blues music (from artists such as Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Albert King, and B.B. King), dancing, "picking" at his guitar, and playing his harmonicas. Robert loved watching Family Feud, hosted by Steve Harvey, while enjoying "a taste" of Brandy with a little sugar added. He was a simple man who stood by basic life principles: honor and integrity. His word and handshake were bond. The most important thing to Robert was his family, working hard and making an earnest living. He is loved and will be deeply missed.
