Robert Lewis Chappell was born January 27, 1935, to the late Sherman and Marie Chappell in Montgomery County, Alabama. He was affectionately known as "Bob."
He was united in holy matrimony to Aldonia Curry, March 27, 1956. They were blessed with two sons, Robert Lewis Jr., and Kip Carlos.
Bob graduated from Dunbar High School in Ramer, Alabama, and attended Philander Smith College in Little Rock, Arkansas.
During his high school years, he was a school bus driver, graduated first in his class, and completed an apprenticeship at Crittenden's Tailoring and Alteration Shop in Montgomery along with the renowned Mrs. Rosa Parks.
In 1956, Bob enlisted in the United States Air Force. Technical skills and training led him to a career in military radar technology, industrial production system tools, tailoring and upholstering. In addition to his regular work, Bob often managed to also have a part-time job. He was an avid pinochle player.
He was a participant in pivotal historical moments including the Montgomery Civil Rights Movement, Cuban missile crisis, and Cold War nuclear missions. His Air Force career led him to several postings in the United States and traveled overseas. After 20 years of honorable active service in the USAF, he retired in 1976 and settled his family in Dayton where he embarked on a 30 year career with General Motors.
Bob leaves to remember and celebrate his life, his wife of 65 years, Aldonia Curry Chappell, two sons, Robert Jr. (Natasha) Chappell, Topsfield, MA, and Kip Carlos (Sonja) Chappell, New York, NY; two grandchildren, Eloise Aldonia nad Dasheill Oberon Chappell,Topsfield, MA; three brothers, Willie J. Chappell, Columbus, GA, John H. (Leila) Chappell and Noah Chappell, Montgomery, AL; two sisters, Mattie C. McCarter and Dorothy C. Arrington, Montgomery, AL; three brothers-in-law: Lemly (Mable) Curry, Richard (Terrie) Curry and Alvester Curry, Lousiville, KY ; three sisters-in-law, Geraldine Curry, Miami FL, Allena (Julius) Norman, Montgomery, AL, Lillie (Charlie) Hardy, Tuskegee AL ; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and many loved friends.
Family will receive friends Monday, May 3, 2021 from 10:30 a.m. until the time of the funeral service at 11:30 a.m. at Newcomer North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Rd., Dayton. Private burial with full military honors at Dayton National Cemetery. The state of Ohio is under a mandatory mask order and has required that face masks be worn in all public places.
