Robert Fred "Bob" Cairo, 80, of Oakwood, passed away on December 24, 2018 at Hearth and Home of Vandalia.
He was born on October 23, 1938 in Philadelphia, PA.
Bob served as a Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy during Vietnam before later retiring as a Commander. He was attached to the III Marine Amphibious Force, 53rd "Sea Bee" Battalion. He was awarded the Navy Commendation Medal with Combat V, Combat Action Ribbon, Purple Heart, and other decorations.
He was an avid history buff, collector of antiques and had a personal library of 20,000 books. He wrote numerous articles on nautical subjects and was published in the Mariner's Mirror and the Nautical Research Guild. He was a lifelong painter, and studied Blacksmithing after he retired from the Navy.
In November 1960, he married Ruth (Miller) Cairo and they renewed their vows in November 2010 to mark their fiftieth anniversary.
Bob is survived by sons, Robert Jr. and his wife, Joni, and son, Joseph; many grandchildren and great grandchildren.
Bob was preceded in death by his Wife, Ruth, of 54 years.
A small memorial service will be conducted at the Newcomer Funeral Home (South Chapel), 3940 Kettering Blvd., Kettering, OH at 5 p.m. Wednesday, January 9, 2019 where family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until the time of service at 5 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, contributions to Hospice of Miami Valley will be appreciated.
