Richard Warren Smeltzer, 93, of Dayton, passed away on Friday, July 22, 2022 at Walnut Creek Assisted Living in Kettering, Ohio. He was born April 12, 1929, in Cleveland, Ohio, to the late Andrew John and Mildred (Cansky) Smeltzer. He attended John Marshall High School, then furthered his education at Case Western Reserve University and The Cleveland Institute of Art. Richard retired from The Dow Chemical Company (Midland, Michigan) in 1996, where he worked as an electrical engineer.
He married Theresa Marie (Nowakowski) Smeltzer on April 22, 1950, in Cleveland. They built a life together and raised seven sons and one daughter. After Theresa's passing, he married Marylee Bertha Mott (nee Baldwin) on October 26, 1990 in Midland, Michigan. He was a volunteer firefighter and EMT at Sharon Twp. Fire Department, Ohio. Richard was also a solider in the Salvation Army in Midland, Michigan. He loved his family and was a devoted father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He enjoyed the outdoors, reading, music, art, and researching his family genealogy on the computer.
He is survived by his children, Raymond (Sherry) of Miamisburg, OH, Robert (Mary) of Broadview Hts., OH, Richard (Kathy) of Wooster, OH, Lester (Anna) of Brunswick, OH, Leonard (Diana) of Brookfield, WI, Lawrence of Midland, MI, Matthew (DeAnn) of Shingle Springs, CA, and Christina (John) Strayer of Hilliard, OH; 18 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and many other family members and friends.
Internment by the Ware-Smith-Woolever and Co. Funeral Home, Midland, MI. A memorial celebration of life will be held at a future date by the family. His final resting place will be at Midland City Cemetery in Michigan.
