RICHARD MARTIN MELKE, age 67, left this world Wednesday evening to go to a place where he can breathe free.
He leaves behind his loving wife of 45 years, Sandy; 1 son, Rick (Kristie LeVangie) Melke; 2 daughters, Rachel (Ceasar) Souza and Amy Melke. He is also survived by 10 grandchildren: Jennifer, Michael, Tori, Eric, Ceasar Jr., Ben, Allyson, Juli, Emily, and Timothy. He is also survived by 5 great-granddaughters and 1 great-grandson. He also leaves behind brothers Ted (Sandy) Appplegate, Ned (Kathy) Applegate, Russell Hayden and Kenny Hayden; sisters Kathy Hayden and Sandy Hayden; and many other family members.
He worked for the City of Dayton for 37 years. He served 2 years of active duty in the Army, and 11 years in active reserve (serving in both 2291st and 705th divisions). He was a Vietnam Veteran. He was a 35-year friend of Bill W. He loved helping people. He could be seen walking the neighborhood with the family dog several times a day or sitting on the porch greeting passers-by. He was very devoted to family and was very much loved by all. We want to thank the staff of Heartland of Kettering for their love and support.
