Richard G. Ward, affectionately known as Dick, passed away on October 30, 2024, in Dayton, Ohio, at the age of 99. Born on December 22, 1924, in Detroit, Michigan, Dick's journey through life was marked by his profound dedication to family, unwavering kindness, and remarkable intelligence.
A proud graduate of the University of Michigan, Dick embodied the spirit of a lifelong learner. He approached life with a smart and empathetic demeanor, always ready to offer support and understanding to those around him. His generosity knew no bounds; he loved unconditionally, making those in his life feel valued and cherished.
As a devoted family man, Dick's greatest pride was his family. He was married to his beloved wife, Kay Ward, for an incredible 71 years. Their love story was one for the ages, filled with laughter, companionship, and deep affection. Together, they raised five children: Susan Thomas (Jonathan), Richard Ward (Debbie), Ken Ward (Barb), Charlie Ward and Maggie Hamm. Each child carried forward Dick's values of kindness and acceptance, attributes that he instilled in them through his unwavering support and love.
Dick's legacy continued with his grandchildren, each of whom brought joy to his life: Nolan (Meghan), Joel, Evan (Erica), Simon, Hayley (Rob), Colin, Melanie, Elliot (Hannah), Kyle, Eric (Jessica) and Dustin (Catie) and great-grandchildren, Alayna, Christopher, Clark, Emma, Lars, Julia, and Nora.
Throughout his vibrant life, Dick remained a dedicated sports fan, cheering passionately for his favorite teams and creating precious memories shared with loved ones.
Dick was preceded in death by his parents, Kenneth and Hazel Ward, his son, Charlie Ward, and his sister, Kathleen Wooton.
As we remember Dick, let us carry forward the love he shared so generously, the laughter that echoed in his presence, and the lessons he taught us about being supportive and kind. His spirit will forever remain in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to know him, a testament to a life well-lived.
A memorial service will be held at 5:00 pm on Wednesday, November 6, at Christ United Methodist Church, 3440 Shroyer Road, Kettering, Ohio 45429. A light supper will follow.
