Richard J. Bernhard, age 90 of Dayton, passed away Thursday, November 22, 2018 at Hospice of Dayton. He was born February 12, 1928 in Dayton, Ohio to the late Frederick and Katherine Bernhard.
In addition to his parents, Dick was preceded in death by siblings, Fred Bernhard, Walt Bernhard and Janet Gemin.
Richard is survived by his wife of 68 years, Helen (Volk) Bernhard; daughters, Sandra (David Montgomery) Bernhard and Cheryl (Kenneth) Pifer; grandchildren, Matthew (Linda), Michael, Emily (Michael), Molly (Brian), Abigail (Randy) and Timothy (Alison); thirteen great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Dolly Bernhard and brother-in-law, Thomas (Pat) Volk as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Dick was a 1945 graduate of Patterson Co-op High School and completed training as a tool maker through his employer. Dick honorably served the U.S. Army Air Corp as a corporal. After his return, Dick was employed at NCR as a tool maker. He later opened a woodworking shop in north Dayton and another in Butler Township specializing in cabinetry. Dick also worked for Material Distributors Inc. in sales and management before retirement in 1988.
Dick was a member of Epiphany Lutheran Church and enjoyed, boating, RV-ing, woodworking and the outdoors in his spare time.
Family will receive guests from 9:30-11:00 am Thursday, November 29, 2018 at Epiphany Lutheran Church, 6430 Far Hills Ave, Dayton, OH 45459. Funeral service will immediately follow at 11:00 am also at the church, Pastor Charlie Woodward officiating. Procession to Dayton Memorial Park for burial will conclude services. Memorial contributions made be made to Hospice of Dayton or the Pantry at Epiphany Lutheran Church.
