Rhoda Thiel Sandberg, left this earthly life on December 15, 2013 at Indu & Raj Soin Medical Center.
She was born on August 10, 1928 in Natick, Massachusetts to the late William and Dagmar Thiel who immigrated to this country from Estonia.
After graduating from Medfield High School she attended Utica College of Syracuse University for one year and then Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York.
Rhoda joined the United States Air Force on Columbus Day, 1950. Her first assignment as an automatic teletype operator at McClellan AFB, Sacramento, CA, followed by an assignment at the Pentagon.
As a S/Sgt Rhoda returned to San Antonio to attend Class 53B of Officer Candidate School and graduated as a 2nd Lieutenant. At Francis E. Warren AFB, Wyoming she completed Supply School, served as Clothing Sales Officer, and was promoted to 1st Lt.
On 5 Sept. 1953 Rhoda married T/Sgt Lyle Sandberg, they were both assigned to Tachikawa, Japan. Rhoda headed a branch in the Supply Depot and later became Top Secret Control Officer at NAMAP Headquarters. With her first pregnancy, Rhoda was discharged as required by the Air Force at that time, just before receiving her Captaincy.
As a civilian Rhoda had a 7 year career as a Realtor, did custom baking under the name of "The Wooden Spoon" and for 10 years provided adult foster care to clients of the Clark County Mental Health system.
Rhoda is a member of St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church in Huber Heights. In past years she served as organist, junior choir director, financial secretary, VBS helper, on committees and has been a choir member for over 25 years. She enjoyed baking cakes for special occasions and celebrations at the church for many years.
In addition to her parents she was also preceded in death by her brother, George.
Rhoda is survived by her loving sons, Jay, Jud and Jan; grandsons, Justin, Adam and Joshua.
Visitation will be held from 10 -11 AM Saturday, December 21, 2013, at St. Matthew Evangelical Lutheran Church, 5566 Chambersburg Rd, Huber Heights where funeral services will begin at 11:00 AM on Saturday.
Burial in the Forest Hills Memorial Gardens with Military Honors.
