Philip E. Usrey Jr., 74, passed away June 6.
He is survived by his wife, Patricia Henrich, of Beavercreek; daughters Kathi (Del) Hadley of Paragon IN, and Karen (Doug) Kerr of Dayton; granddaughter Heather Copeland (Jesús Morales) of Las Vegas NV; stepchildren Brian Cates of Austin TX, Jason (Lisa) Cates of Baker LA, and Maureen (John) Byrne of Hilliard OH; step-grandchildren Fiona, Aidan, and Liam Byrne.
He was born in Mayfield KY and was graduated from Murray State University 1954. After a short stint in the KY National Guard and another as a teacher in the Graves County (KY) school system, he moved to Dayton to accept a position at DESC. After a 31-year career in Air Force logistics, he retired from federal service at Wright-Patt in 1991. He then worked as a consultant for various contract firms for another 10 years.
He was a friend of Bill W. from 1977 to his death. He was a volunteer mediator with the Dayton Mediation Center for several years, working to help people resolve their conflicts.
He loved music (especially the tuba), literature (Hemingway, John LeCarre), history (Civil War and Lincoln) and the NY Times. He was a great one-on-one conversationalist, known for his quiet, intellectual approach to political discourse.
His family thanks Crossroads Hospice for their many acts of kindness and compassionate care and support. Funeral arrangements are being handled by Newcomer Funeral Home.
