Opal died peacefully in her home at 10 Wilmington Place on Friday, November 30. Born August 21, 1921 in Dayton, Ohio, she was a daughter of the late Arch and Lavada Mays.
She was preceded by her loving husband of 64 years, Robert Sr., their beloved daughter Ruth Ann McDonald, and sisters Ruth Johnson and Thelma Sullivan, and brothers, Arvel and Earl Mays.
Along with her late husband Robert, she was instrumental in the founding of Crestview Baptist Church.
She is survived by children, Arlene (Dave) Gates and Dr. Robert A. (Karen) Calico Jr. She is also survived by her numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; Mike (Kris) Gates of Colorado Springs, CO, and their children Jordan and Deven; Sandra (Tim) Davis of Oakwood, OH and their children Tim Jr. and Alex; Lisa Gates of Washington, D.C.; Susan (Jay) Schweiterman of Centerville, OH and their children Meg, Will and Emma; Robert A. (Jennifer) Calico III of Houston, TX and their child Evan Robert; Michele (Bryan) Schopmeyer of Dallas, TX and their children Maddy, Anna and Kate; and Kelly (Luke) Harms of Hilliard, OH and their children Ella and Isaac. She will also be missed by her many nieces, nephews, extended family and friends.
Visitation is scheduled Monday, December 3, 2012 from 5-7 pm at Newcomer Funeral Home South Chapel (3940 Kettering Blvd, Kettering, OH 45439). Services will be held Tuesday, December 4, 2012 at 1 pm at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Dayton Memorial Park.
