Nelson Hitchcock, age 89 of Centerville, passed away peacefully on December 22, 2021 at Hospice of Dayton. He was born on November 26, 1932 in Nashville, TN to the late Nelson and Lilla (Mankin) Hitchcock. In addition to his parents, Nelson was preceded in death by his sisters, Helen Rode and Ruth Nestingen.
He is survived by his loving wife of 59 years, Dell Hitchcock; children, Rick (Annemarie) Hitchcock, Heidi (Ned) Bryant and Hilary Hitchcock; grandchildren, Maddy Bryant, Jack Bryant and Evan Cashwell; sister, Joyce Hitchcock and numerous extended family and dear friends.
Nelson attended and graduated from Emory University with a Bachelor's of Science degree. He also graduated from the University of Georgia with a Master's of Fine Arts in Voice performance. Nelson started out at WGTV as an announcer and director before moving on to Valdosta State College where he was a Professor of Theatre and Speech. He worked and retired as a Middle School teacher in Elberton, Georgia. Nelson was very active collaborating with his wife, Dell Hitchcock, in acting and directing music theatre in Valdosta, GA, Elberton, GA and Athens, GA. He was also active in the Centerville Community Chorus and Miami Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Dayton, OH.
He was a wonderful husband, father, and grandfather, as well as a teacher, actor, singer, philosopher, punster, crossword puzzle worker, green screen user, YouTube poster, and Facebook enthusiast.
In lieu of flowers, donations are suggested for either Miami Valley Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, or the Centerville Community Chorus, in Nelson's memory.
