Montie Smith, age 92, of Springfield (formerly of Rush, Kentucky) passed away on September 10, 2023, at SOIN Medical Center, with his loving children by his side. He was born in Varney, Kentucky, on February 8, 1931, the son of the late Henry and Myrtle Smith.

He was preceded in death by his parents; former wife, Alice Strauss Smith; daughter, Laurie Tyler; and his siblings, Kelsie Smith, Nelsie Robinette, Leroy Smith, June Stewart, Yvonne Hazelet, Sarah Pinkerton and Emma Adams.

Montie is survived by his loving children, Katherine "Kathy" Hunter and Montie Floyd Smith; brothers, Troy Smith and Hoover Smith; and many other loving family and friends.

He proudly served his country by serving in the United States Army during the Korean War. Montie retired from General Motors Truck and Bus after 30 years as a Truck Driver. He was a member of Rush Chapel in Rush, Kentucky, prior to moving to Ohio. In his free time, he enjoyed doing lawn mower repair/reconditioning and spending time in the woods around Rush, Kentucky. Montie was also known for his compassion for stray dogs that were left in his neighborhood and would often be seen on walks with them. Many of these dogs became his faithful companions after he took them in.

A Celebration of Montie's Life will be held at a later date with family and friends in Michigan.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to the Humane Society of Dayton.

" Fill not your hearts with pain and
sorrow, but remember me in every
tomorrow. Remember the joy, the
laughter, the smiles, I've only gone
to rest a little while. Although my
leaving causes pain and grief, my
going has eased my hurt and given
me relief. So dry your eyes and
remember me, not as I am now,
but as I used to be. Because I will
remember you all and look on with
a smile. Understand in your
hearts, I've only gone to rest a little
while. As long as I have the love of
each of you, I can live my life in
the hearts of all of you. "
