Miriam Joyce Terrill, 89, formerly of Scranton, Iowa, passed away peacefully on February 26, 2019, at 10 Wilmington Place Assisted Living in Kettering, Ohio.
Joyce was born August 28, 1929, to parents James and Miriam Mickey in Centerville, Iowa. She graduated from Seymour High School in 1947. Joyce was Homecoming Queen and managed the school's basketball team, which won the Iowa Girls' Basketball State Championship. After graduation, Joyce attended Northeast Missouri State University in Kirksville and received her elementary teaching certification. She was employed by the Scranton Consolidated School in 1950, where she taught first grade.
On June 15, 1952, Joyce married Darwin (Bud) Terrill at the Methodist Church in Seymour, Iowa. They eventually moved to the family farm southeast of Scranton, growing crops and feeding cattle. Joyce left teaching to become a farmwife and raise their three daughters. In 1986, she returned to her love of teaching as a Head Start teaching assistant.
Joyce was an active member of the Scranton community. She attended Providence Church until its closure. She taught Sunday and Vacation Bible School. She continued this service at the Scranton United Methodist Church. Joyce was a 50-year member of United Methodist Women. She was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star and her neighborhood U-Go-I-Go club, holding officer positions in both. Joyce enjoyed hand quilting and with friends organized the Heartfelt Quilters group. She also served on the Scranton Betterment Committee in her retirement. Residing on the farm, and later in their home on Lincoln Street in Scranton, was a joyful time in her life. Frequently, there were friends gathered around her kitchen table with lots of coffee and laughter.
Joyce was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Micki Terrill on June 15, 2004; and husband, Darwin Terrill on March 8, 2006.
Joyce is survived by two daughters, Jane Copley (William) of Beavercreek, Ohio and Sally Tracy (Patrick) of Ames, Iowa; three granddaughters, Emery Copley, Erin Tracy, and Shannon Tracy. Joyce is also survived by many long-time friends in her beloved Scranton community.
A memorial service will be held Friday, June 7, 2019, 4PM at the Scranton United Methodist Church with Rev. Joyce Webb officiating.
