Michael Amedius Chagunda

Michael Amedius Chagunda, age 57, of Bellbrook, OH passed away after an extended illness on November 3, 2019.
Mike was born on October 15, 1962, in the city of Dedza located in the country of Malawi on the continent of Africa. He was the son of Joseph and Nora (Chiutsa) Chagunda. On June 17, 2000, Mike married Grace Maosa Chagunda in Nashville, TN and they later moved to Bellbrook, Ohio.

Before Mike became a US citizen he attended the University of Malawi where he received his Bachelor's Degree in Political Science. He then traveled to the United States and became a US citizen and attended the University of Pittsburgh and earned a Master's Degree in Library Information Science.

After his education, Mike received a position with the New York Public Library where he worked from 1992 to 1996. From there he moved to Nashville, TN to become the manager of the Nashville Public Library from 1996 to 2005. Mike's next move took him and his family to Dayton, OH to become the manager of the Dayton Public Library from 2005 to 2015. More recently, before Mike's illness, he was promoted to the manager of the Queens Public Library in New York City.

Throughout his life, Mike was an avid reader that resulted in not only furthering his career but taught him more about life and the world around him. Mike was also very proud of his African heritage and enjoyed listening to his African music. However, Mike's greatest joy in life was his family and having the opportunity to enjoy spending time with his children and grandchildren.

Along with his loving wife, Grace; mother, Nora Chagunda of Malawi, Africa, Mike leaves behind a legacy consisting of his daughters, Yamikani (Dustin Drake) Chagunda of Miamisburg, OH, Mphatson Chagunda of Bellbrook, Oh and Mtisunger Chagunda of Columbus, OH; son, Tiwonge Chagunda of Malawi, Africa; granddaughter, Laila Drake; brothers, Manford Chagunda of Malawi, Africa and Alex Chagunda of the United States; sisters, Chrissy Chikuta, Prudence Chawango, Judith Chagunda and Martha Mantaga all of Malawi, Africa.

Mike was preceded in death by his Father, Joseph Chagunda.

Visitation will be held on Saturday, November 9, 2019 from 11:00 am to 1:00 pm at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions, 820 Miamisburg-Centerville Road, Dayton, Ohio. Funeral services will immediately follow the visitation at 1:00 pm. Mike will be interred at David's Cemetery.
