ALEXICKO, Michael, age 84, of Riverside, OH, passed away Monday, January 29, 2007. He was born November 23, 1922 in Atlas, PA, the son of Nicholas and Claudia (Pechuchouk) Alexicko. He retired from United States Navy in 1971 and holds two Distinguished Flying Cross Awards and the Air Medal for his service during World War II. He enlisted in the Navy December 17, 1940. Alexicko played an active role in several Pacific Actions. Attached to Torpedo Squadron Three aboard the USS Yorktown as turret gunner, he took part in the first aerial flight of carrier-based torpedo bombers over the Tokyo area in 1945. Alexicko was awarded the Distinguised Flying Cross for his heroism and extraordinary achievement during this operation. His citation reads in part, "In the face of strong enemy air opposition, intense and accurate anti-aircraft fire and knowing that no escape was possible if forced down, he remained calm and aggressive at all times, keeping his pilot informed of the tactical situation. During the destructive attack on a strategic war plant, he vigorously and effectively straffed enemy gun positions thereby contributing greatly to the success of the mission. His courage, skill and devotion to duty were at all times in keeping with the highest tradition of the United States Naval Service." Alexicko was also awarded the Air Medal with Gold Star for his courage during operations against the Japanese in the vicinity of the Philippines and the China Sea in November 1944 and January 1945. Survived by his loving wife of fifty-nine years, Alma (Postal), son Michael Alexicko, daughters Martha (Ty) Morris, and Celeste (Thomas) Lane. Grandchildren Melissa and John Alexicko, Matthew and Stephanie Morris, Justin, Robert, and Olivia Lane. Visitation will be Thursday, February 1, 2007 from 5-8 p.m. at Newcomer Funeral Home Beavercreek Chapel where funeral services will be held Friday, February 2, 2007 at 10:30 a.m. with Father Dave Brinkmoller officiating. Burial will follow at Dayton National Cemetery.
