In Loving Memory of Melvinia (Roberts) Turner

Melvinia (Roberts) Turner, a compassionate soul born in Lisman, Alabama on December 30, 1947, departed this world on January 31, 2025, leaving behind a legacy of love and resilience. In her passing, we celebrate a woman whose life was marked by her unwavering devotion to her family and the community she cherished.

Mel's career was a testament to her commitment to service. She faithfully worked with the Transportation Security Administration at the Dayton International Airport, ensuring the safety of travelers, and she dedicated her talents to the Public School System in Dayton, Ohio, where her contributions shaped the lives of many young minds. Education was a valued pursuit for Mel; she attended Choctaw County School in Alabama and later continued her studies at Sinclair Community College.

Her personality sparkled with the brilliance of sassy determination and a protective nature that enveloped her loved ones. Mel was described as a caretaker—undaunted, stubborn, and at times, unquestionably bossy—attributes that stemmed from a profound love for her family. She was always ready to help, her heart large enough to embrace everyone around her, particularly her beloved daughters, Carolyn Turner and Phyllis Turner, who revered her strength and wisdom.

Life was vibrant for Mel, filled with hobbies and interests that brought joy and connection. An enthusiastic bowler, she found immense pleasure in ushering at church and indulging in Bingo games. Coordinating activities brought out Mel's creative spirit, while her love for word search puzzles often showcased her sharp intellect. As a devoted member of Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church, she found solace in Bible studies and the uplifting harmonies of singing hymns, deepening her spiritual journey as she nourished those around her.

Melvinia was not only a mother but also a cherished grandmother and great-grandmother, whose adoration for her descendants knew no bounds. She is survived by grandchildren Dominic Seldon, Sr. (Samantha), Isaiah Thompson (Khalicia), Daniel Turner, and Daniecia Turner, alongside great-grandchildren Lilian Seldon, Dominic Seldon, Jr., Damaris Turner, Dallas Turner, Dupri Turner, and Draysen Turner. Each of them carries a piece of her resilient spirit and profound love.

She is further survived by her sisters, Florence Dixon and Sadie Cade, as well as sisters-in-law, Carolyn Roberts and Freda Roberts. Melvinia also leaves behind special individuals who touched her life: Sally Johnson, Aurzelia Watson, Gloria Dow, Michael Tiki, and Simmie Marsh, along with a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends, all of whom will miss her zest for life and unyielding support.

Melvinia (Roberts) Turner is reunited with those who have gone before her, including her father, Jesse Roberts, Sr.; her mother, Lucinda Roberts; and her dearly departed siblings: Jesse Roberts, Jr., Betty Watson (Davis), Andrew Roberts, Jerry Roberts, Willie Roberts, Tommie Roberts, Floriaetta Roberts, and Lawrence Roberts, Sr.

In celebrating Mel's life, we commemorate her legacy of love; her indomitable spirit and unwavering affection will forever guide those she leaves behind. As we gather to honor her memory, we will carry with us the lessons learned from her unrelenting devotion, her fierce love, and her unwavering belief in the importance of family.

A Celebration of Life Service will be held at a later date and will be announced here.  Arrangements entrusted to Newcomer Funeral Home, North Chapel, 4104 Needmore Road. To share a memory of Mel or leave a special message for her family, please sign the online guestbook provided.
