Melvin W. Shaffer

Shaffer, Melvin W, age 93, passed away 22 July 2013 comfortably at home. He was preceded in death by his father: Bert Shaffer, mother: Clara Mae Schreiber, brother: Lewis Shaffer and sister: Betty Gallagher. He was born July 7th, 1920 in Urbana, Ohio.
He enlisted in the Army Air Corps and went on to become a Captain and lead crew navigator on the B24 Liberator during WWII. He taught radio and took charge of the runway in San Marcos, Texas. After the war he attended Case Western Institute of Technology on the GI bill being the first in his family to graduate from college in 1950. During the Korean conflict, he was triple rated as a pilot, bombardier, and navigator. In 1956, he married Emily White. He received a patent for Nuclear Gauge Standardization and an award for saving the government over a million dollars. After over 21 years of civilian service, he retired from his work at DESC as an electrical engineer in qualifications. He enjoyed spending time with grandchildren and pursuing his varied interests bowling, hunting mushrooms, climbing trees, figure skating, gardening, swimming, playing bridge and crossword puzzles. He was a man of few words who will be remembered for his quiet, gentle, non-judgmental loving manner, photographic memory, honorable actions and dry wit.
Mel is survived by his wife of 56 years: Emily (White) Shaffer, his daughters: Jill (Robert Yost) Shaffer & Diane Anderson; grandchildren: Amy Zwissler (Warren III) Hoskinson, Benjamin Yost, Melanie & Robison "Kim" Yost, Anna Alameda, Ansel Michael & Zachary Collin Anderson.
