Mel M. Zappia, age 59 of Dayton, passed away Wednesday, March 25, 2020. He was born December 14, 1960 in Endicott, New York, the son of Rocco and Loretta Zappia.

He is preceded in death by his father, Rocco J. Zappia; and his grandparents, Michael and Rosina Zappia, Peter and Mary Minni.

Mel is survived by his mother, Loretta V. Zappia; sister, Rose Mary Zappia; nieces, Tiffany (Richard) Wampler, Brooke (Chadley) Robinson, Christine Mosley; great nephews, Royce, Trenton, Jordan, Brantley "Chief," Tucker, Jace, Zander; great nieces, Hailey and Willow; aunt, Mary Kay Zappia; many other family members and numerous cousins, including 2 that he was very close to, John and Dan Zappia; many special friends, including his childhood best friends, Rick Genovesi and Collette, James, Eric and Ana Jackson; goddaughter, Ariana Genovesi; and special co-workers, Lance Stewart and Nate Young.

Mel was an accredited chef who studied at the Culinary Institute of America. Over the years, he was a chef at many local area restaurants, including the Ivy Lounge, King Cole, Dorothy Lane Market, Giovanni's, and for the last 20+ years, the Oakwood Club. He was also the owner of Comanche Steak and BBQ Company. He was a member of the Sons of Italy and the Knights of Columbus. Mel was a great friend to all and was always there to help anyone whenever he could. He loved his country and John Wayne.

Private services. A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date.
