Mary Rose Haley, Wife, Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother, Age 91, passed
peacefully at home, Wednesday, November 28, 2018. Her loving husband of 70 years,
James, was by her side, holding her hand as she passed. She was surrounded by her
family in the home she shared with her husband and children for over 58 years in
Beavercreek Township, Ohio. She was supported by the good people of Brookdale Hospice
who went out of their way to make sure she was cared for and had everything she needed to
make her journey.
Preceding her in death were two sons, John Paul and Robert Joseph; two sisters, Ruth
Davis (husband John Davis), Lola Boff (husband Robert Boff); two brothers, Robert Koenn
(wife Shirley Koenn), John Koenn (wife Loraine Koenn) and her parents, Thomas and Jessie
Koenn.
She leaves behind her husband, James; four sons, James (wife Carolina and
grandchildren, Katrin (great grandson, Noah) and Kirsten); Michael (wife Katherine); David
(wife Patricia); Patrick (wife Therese, grandchildren James, Rachel, Todd, Ryan and Renee
and 5 great grandchildren, Elias, Roman, Kimberly, Lucas and Madeline Rose); daughter
Patricia (husband Charles, grandchildren Adele (husband Jeff, great grandchildren Sasha
and Samantha; Tyler and Gillian).
Mary was a devout Catholic and attended St Luke Catholic Church. Mary embraced her faith
during times of sadness, tragedy and happiness.
Mary was born in Holgate, OH on March 19, 1927. She attended and graduated from
Defiance College, with a degree in nursing.
Mary and James were blessed with 6 sons and one daughter; 10 grandchildren and 6 great
grandchildren. Mary was never happier than when she was holding a baby or interacting with
a child. There was nothing she enjoyed more than holding her children and grandchildren
close to her, rocking them and singing made-up songs until they fell asleep in her arms.
Mary never met a baby she couldn't soothe. Anywhere she would go, she would speak to
any child or fuss over a stranger's baby. She believed all children were beautiful and gifts
from God and treasured life. She was a very tender hearted person and would easily cry at
the thought of a child or animal being neglected or harmed. She could never fathom such
cruelty.
The Haley home was always the family hub to gather. It was usually loud and filled with lots
of laughter. Several weddings were held there. Mary always embraced her daughters-in-law
and sons-in-law like they were part of the family. She was a talented seamstress and made
many beautiful wedding gowns for her daughter and daughters-in-law.
When some of her children were blessed with giving her grandchildren, she was never more
alive with happiness. Each future family addition was anticipated and welcomed like he or
she was royalty. Numerous quilts, sleep sacks, bibs and blankets had already been
completed months before each child's birth. The countdown was on as she eagerly awaited
the blessed event. Those beautiful babies were promptly placed in our Mother's waiting
arms to carry on the tradition of lulling and cradling the treasured babe, like she did her own.
Each grandchild knew they were safe, loved and secure, being in those arms. As they grew,
she only reinforced that feeling of love. She gave her time and resources tirelessly and
generously. I would not be the person I am today, and I am sure my brothers would concur,
had it not been for the blessing and privilege of having a mother (and father) such as ours.
As her grandchildren have grown and are now blessed with their own children, her resolve
was true to love each great grandchild like she loved her own.
On Wednesday, November 28th, our Dad lost his wife of 70 years. We lost our mother. But
the world lost a truly kind and wonderful person.
