Mary Kathleen Glavin

May 31, 1926 — January 30, 2017

Mary Kathleen Glavin (Scanlon) passed away at home on January 30, 2017 at the age of 90. She was born to Anna and Michael Scanlon on May 31, 1926 in Dudley, Massachusetts. Always called Kathleen by her family, she completed Bartlett High School in Dudley. After graduating from Lasell Junior College in Newton, Massachusetts, she accepted a job as an executive secretary at American Optical Company in Southbridge, Massachusetts. There, she met and married Robert Glavin, on September 6, 1952. Her husband Bob gave her the nickname Kay, by which she became known to co-workers and friends. Kay and Bob moved to Rochester, New York in 1960, and raised four children. She retired from a career at JC Penney Co. in 1989. After Bob's death in 1995, Kay moved to North Carolina and then to Dayton, Ohio. In May 2016, almost 40 family members gathered in Dayton to celebrate Kay's 90th birthday.

Kay was preceded in death by her husband Robert; her brother Richard; and sisters Sarah and June (Dwyer).

Kay is survived by her four children and their spouses, Elaine Bublitz (Chris) of Seward, Alaska; Robert Glavin (Sheila) of Dayton, Ohio; Joanne Young (Chris) of Columbia, South Carolina; and Sarah Glavin (Donald Hakman) of Rockville, Maryland. Kay delighted in her 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, and took pride in knitting each one a personalized Christmas stocking.

A memorial Mass will be celebrated at the Church of the Incarnation in Centerville, Ohio on February, 18 at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, a cause Kay supported.
