Mary C. Chance, 96 of Centerville passed away peacefully December 25, 2018 surrounded by her family at Hospice of Dayton.
Mary was a devoted wife, loving Mother, Grandmother and Great Grandmother. She was a loyal and compassionate friend.
She was preceded in death by her husband Richard T. Chance, parents James and Evalyn Geus and siblings, Catherine, William, Margaret and John Geus.
Mary is survived by her daughter, Margaret (David) Herbert. Grandchildren, Michael (Sarah) Herbert, Ann (Daniel) Hardin, Susan (Ted) Laws, John Herbert and Maria (Nathan) Lawson. Great-Grandchildren, Shannon Herbert, Matthew (Aerrinn) Hardin, Elizabeth (Andrew) Lazzaro, Joshua and Katherine Hardin, Megan and Caitlyn Laws, Noah, Makayla and Alexander Lawson. Step Great Grandchildren Samuel, Andrew, Emma and Joshua Vargas and numerous nieces and nephews.
Mary, a long time resident of Fairborn, attended and graduated from Bath Township High School. Shortly after her graduation she started working for Wright Patterson Air Force Base, where she worked as a secretary and translated sensitive Russian documents. In 1974 she was awarded the prestigious Top Ten Women of the Year Award from the Dayton Daily News.
Mary was a member of Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church and was involved in Daughters of Isabella, Marian Circle 911. She was a Regent at the state and local level. She moved to Lake Waynoka in 1990. Mary became a full time parishioner of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Arnheim and was involved with the Altar Rosary and bereavement committee. Mary also served as President and many other positions for Lake Waynoka Property Owners Association. Mary enjoyed sewing and making dolls for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She enjoyed fishing, bird watching, gardening and relaxing on her lake property. Mary and her close friends at the Lake played cards frequently. She was very grateful to this group who kept her spirit positive and her mind sharp. In March of 2018, Mary moved to St. Leonard's Living Community.
The family will greet friends January 2, 2019 at 10:00 am at Mary Help of Christians Catholic Church 954 North Maple Ave. Fairborn, Ohio 45324. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow immediately at the church at 11:00 am.
Burial will take place at Woodland Cemetery 281 Dayton Ave. Xenia, Ohio 45385.
