Martha "Marty" Sweitzer

September 29, 1925 — June 14, 2022

Martha "Marty" Sweitzer, of Kettering Ohio passed away on June 14, 2022, surrounded by the children who loved her. She was 96 ½ years young.

Marty was born on September 29, 1925 in the small village of Oneida Kentucky, to the late William Den Hertog and Sophia Hertog Murrell. She moved to Dayton Ohio after graduating from high school, part of the great migration of Appalachians looking for a better life up north. She worked as a bookkeeper for The Standard Oil Company during World War II, and as the war ended, she met and married her late husband, Wayne Sweitzer. As they began their family, Marty gave up working life to become a full- time homemaker. She loved being a "Mom", it was her life, and our family grew to six children.

People were drawn to Mom's liveliness and sense of humor. She found a way to have fun every day, and made sure that growing up, we did too. She loved to play cards, especially poker, and planned family poker nights that would last till the wee hours of the morning. Mom was such an amazing cook.
She made everything from scratch and we could mark our seasons by our favorite dishes: potato salad in the summer and homemade stuffing for Thanksgiving, pineapple fluff for Christmas. She was most famous for her chocolate cake which was hands down the family favorite. Mom loved and enjoyed people and she had the most generous heart. She looked out for our spinster "Aunt Margaret" always making sure she was included in all our events. Mom loved giving little gifts and never visited anyone empty handed. She would save the best of everything she had so she could give it to someone else, especially her children. She was a "good neighbor", always wanting to help out.

Mom had a soft spot for the elderly and children. She was the favorite Aunt to her many nieces and nephews, and especially loved her two nieces, Diann Kerns and Lois Hertog. As her grandchildren came, she lived to spoil them and all five, Kelli, Jeremy, Samantha, Meghan and Cailyn have a "special love" for their "Mamaw". Later in life, she was proud and amazed to be a great grandmother to six. She was devoted to her little dog, "Dixie", who waits for her in Heaven.

In addition to her parents and husband, Mom was preceded in death by her two brothers, William (Catherine) Hertog of New Albany, Indiana and Dill (Ruth) Hertog, of Beavercreek, Ohio.

She is survived by six children: David Sweitzer, Robert (Jacky) Sweitzer, Helen (Richard) Harding, Thomas Sweitzer, Bruce (Renee) Sweitzer and Sophia (Kim) Sweitzer, her grandchildren and great grandchildren.

We'll hold you in our hearts forever, Mom.
