Martha, affectionately known as "Geezy", "Maw Maw", "Ma Faye", and "Lady" by those who loved and knew her best, was born Martha Faye Arnold to Herman and Mamie Arnold on September 10th 1953 in Anniston, Alabama. The youngest of 13, she is preceded in death by her parents and 9 siblings: Harold, Melvin, Barnell, Correll, Horace (Mary), Louise, Joseph, Larry (Virginia) and Margaret. Also, mother-in-law Rachael "Henry Mae" Smith and special nephew Alton Smith.
The matriarch of her family, Martha took pride in preparing a home for her children and grandchildren. She derived great joy from keeping her home 'spic and span' as she welcomed family and strangers alike to enjoy home cooked meals and her colorful storytelling.
She is survived by devoted husband of 47 years Andy J. Smith, son Andy (Ericka) Smith, 3 daughters Rachael (Jerry) Hood, Margaret (Ricardo) Modeste, and Angela Smith. 11 beloved grandbabies: Andy "Jalen" (Celena), Lindsay (Markel), Brittany, Byron "BJ", Jerryonna, Madison, Allison, Journey, London, Justice, Ivy and one great grand baby Laiah. Siblings: Mary Mines, Marvin (Vivian) Arnold, and Murl Hatch. In-laws Herman Smith, Deborah Smith, Brenda (Calvin) Wright, Sonia (Billy) Sanders, Yvonne Smith, Nathaniel Smith Sr. Special nephews Antwon Smith and Nathaniel "Scrappy" Smith Jr. Special nieces Dana (Mark) Fields, Jackie Spencer, Velecia Arnold, Meosha Smith, Princess Davis, Tonja (Ronnie) Thorton and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and close family friends too numerous to name.
The family would like to extend their deepest gratitude to the ICU team at Miami Valley Hospital, with special thanks to "Gordon" who took extra special care of our mother. Also, special thanks to niece Sharventrice "Sha" Westbrook for assisting with arrangements for homecoming. Martha Faye will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her, but her legacy will live on in the family that she loved so much.
Family will receive friends from 6p-8p Thursday October 3rd at Newcomer Funeral Home, 4104 Needmore Rd. Final resting place will be at Jerusalem Cemetery, Bessemer, Alabama.
