Mark &Karen Cummings

August 16, 1957 — July 15, 2022

Mark W. Cummings was born on August 16, 1957 in Akron, Ohio to Lester and Edna Cummings. Karen S. Cummings was born May 2, 1957 in Reed City, Michigan to Clois and Beverley Bowman. They met and fell in love at Mt. Vernon Nazarene College and were married on June 18, 1977. Dedicated to God and each other they built a loving, spiritual family together, raising their two sons, Andy and Scott, in Xenia, Ohio.

Mark began work as an accountant for Safeway, sold cars with Alan Besco Motors, acquired his dream job with GM, earned a degree in Environmental Engineering, and was finishing his career at NCT Technologies Group. He anticipated spending retirement together with Karen, pursuing their passion for nature at the Glenn Helen Nature Preserve and volunteering their time to serve the church and those less fortunate.

Karen dedicated her spiritual and working life to the First Church of the Nazarene in Xenia since 1989. She served the church as administrative assistant of four senior pastors. Working behind the scenes, Karen assisted with communications, planning, project management, and website management. She was a loving devoted wife, mother, and homemaker, continually putting the needs of others above her own.

They were members of the First Church of the Nazarene. With that commitment to membership, Karen gladly served however, wherever, and whenever she was called upon. When the church doors were open, Karen was there, and when they were not, she would dedicate time from home working at the computer, phone or in the kitchen for whatever the church needed. Later in his life, Mark became associated with the Christ Episcopal Church where he was involved with their homeless missions and served as a member of the Vestry.

Mark and Karen were a team. Mark assisted Karen with her commitment to Bridges of Hope, and Karen served with him at the food bank and homeless shelter. God's love shone through Mark and Karen into the lives they touched. They were supportive, reliable, friendly, and generous people who never hesitated to help anyone in need. They were cherished and beloved by many and will be greatly missed.

To be absent from the body is to be present with the Lord. (2 Cor. 5:1-21) On Friday, July 15, 2022, they were involved in a fatal automobile accident, and the angels came and escorted Mark and Karen to their heavenly home.

They were preceded in death by Mark's parents, Lester and Edna (Burkhart) Cummings, Mark's brother, Robert Cummings, and Karen's beloved sister, Sheila Bowman.

They are survived by Karen's parents, Clois and Beverley (Curtis) Bowman, Sons and daughter in law, Andrew and Jennifer (Baker) Cummings and Scott Cummings, Four grandchildren, Kayla, Mason, Raegan and Baylee, Brothers and sisters-in-law, David and Laurel (Marsh) Cummings, Steve and Edwina (Dillon) Cummings and Steve Bowman and Nephews and niece, Jonas Neal, Justin Cummings and Jennifer (Cummings) Pegram.
