Marjorie Elaine Barkalow

Marjorie Elaine Barkalow, was born on August 15, 1923 to Elizabeth Walsh Phillips and Alvin Phillips. She was the forth and youngest child: An older sister died as a child; Edmund, who proceeded Marjorie in death; and Robert. Marjorie grew up in Denver, Colorado. She lived many years at 757 South Emerson Avenue. Her mother, Elizabeth, sold flowers while her father was a Denver City Policeman. In 1941 Marjorie graduated from Denver South High School. In 1943 Marjorie met George Barkalow, who stationed in Denver, at Lakeside Amusement Park. George Barkalow was transferred to the Army Aircorp Base in Kearny, Nebraska but on leave he returned to Denver and escorted Marjorie to St. Louis, where they were married, in September 1943. Marjorie became pregnant with their first child as World War II was ending. George and Marjorie were planning to return to Denver but her father, who was now widowed, told them the furnace did not work well in the house. So Marjorie and George turned to the home of his parents, in Perry, Ohio. From 1945 to 1954 Marjorie and George lived in Perry, Ohio. They had three children born in Perry, Richard, 1946; Robert, born 1948 and who died that some year; and Mary, 1952. Marjorie started college at Lake Superior College while George worked for Industrial Rayon Corporation. George got a better job as a civilian at Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Dayton, Ohio in 1954 so Marjorie, George, and the children moved to Dayton. Marjorie continued working on her college degree, part-time, at the University of Dayton; she graduated in 1964. She did take a year off of school to have another child, Alvin, born in 1960. Marjorie later earned her master's degree at Wright State University. Starting in 1965 she was employed by Kettering Public Schools, as an elementary teacher, at Ernst Elementary, Oak Creek Elementary, and retired from Kennedy Elementary in 1990. Marjorie Barkalow is survived by her brother, Robert; three children, Richard (Susanne), Mary (George Campbell), and Alvin (Julie); four grandchildren, Melissa, Melanie, Brian, and Allison. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, one son, and one brother. Donations may be made to the ASPCA (424 E. 92nd St, New York, NY 10128) in Marjorie's memory.
