Margie Hoxie

October 3, 1924 — October 23, 2013

With her children holding her hands, Margie B. Hoxie, 89, died peacefully at Hospice of Dayton on October 23, 2013 due to complications from pneumonia.

Mrs. Hoxie, cherished wife of 63 years to (Lt. Col. ret.) Lloyd E. Hoxie, was a 40-year resident of Fairborn and former member of Mary Help of Christians Church before moving with her husband to Kettering in 2005. During her life, Mrs. Hoxie was most proud of being an Air Force wife and mother to her four children.

For 30 years, she was a Red Cross Nurse volunteer at WPAFB Medical Center, where the service Mrs. Hoxie most enjoyed was writing letters home for Vietnam veterans. She was also active in the Officers' Wives' Club and the Antiques Society, winning several awards for her entries in the annual Christmas event "Decorating with Antiques."

Mrs. Hoxie especially liked to travel with her husband, making several trips overseas and many cross-country road trips to see this country, which she loved. She enjoyed live theater and held season's tickets to the Victoria Theater in Dayton and the Wright-State Theater. Born in Wilson, OK, on October 3, 1924, Mrs. Hoxie grew up in Oklahoma City and was a civil servant in Washington, D. C., with her beloved mother during the War. She met her husband in Shreveport, LA, and they were married in January 1950 at Reese, AFB in Lubbock, TX. Loyally supporting her husband's Air Force career, Mrs. Hoxie reared their children in Texas, Florida, and California, before happily settling in Ohio, where she made life-long friends and enjoyed her favorite years as an Air Force wife during her husband's time in SAC (Strategic Air Command) at Lockbourne AFB in Columbus. Mrs. Hoxie loved beautiful things, especially every kind of flower and bird.

She is survived by her husband, who devoted himself to her care in her later years, and four children, Lynn (and the late James Crowe), Gayle (and Carl Buskuhl), Mark (and Diane), and Scott (and Tracey), 9 grandchildren, and seven great-grandchildren. We will miss her forever.

Visitation will be at Newcomer Funeral Home, 3380 Dayton-Xenia Rd., Beavercreek from 6:00-8:00 p.m. Friday Oct. 25. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday Oct. 26 at 10:30 a.m. at The Church of St. Charles Borromeo at 4500 Ackerman Blvd. in Kettering. Mrs. Hoxie will be buried beside her beloved mother and step-father, Jewel and Amos Merrifield, at the Byron Road Cemetery in Fairborn. The family sincerely thanks the Medical Intensive Care Unit of Kettering Memorial Hospital for their exceptional medical treatment and the entire staff and volunteers of Hospice of Dayton for their compassion and comfort. Charitable donations can be made to Hospice of Dayton.
