Mae Ella Coatney was born on December 2, 1946, in Dayton, Ohio to Eddie Walker, Sr and Nancy Ogelsby Walker Dean. Mae departed this life peacefully, surrounded by loved ones on September 10, 2024. Mrs. Mae E. Coatney was a lifelong resident of Dayton, Ohio for over seventy-seven years. She graduated from Roosevelt High School Class of 1965. She was employed by and retired from the Dayton Daily News Paper, after over twenty -five years of service. Even after retirement Mae continued working, keeping her hand to the plow by working at Marriott Hotels, Meijers and TJ Maxx. Mae was a faithful member of Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church for over sixty-five years. She received a recognition award, for fifty-years of faithful service in 2009. She served as an Usher for over forty years; and she was a member of the Mission Ministry. Mae was also a member of the Sisters in Christ Chorale- sisters which traveled to other churches to sing. She enjoyed singing and she was always willing to do as the Psalmist stated, “Make a Joyful Noise unto the Lord”.
Mae met Beverlay Coatney in the early 1970’s and it was love at first sight. To this union, Mae gave birth to five young men and lastly her baby girl. This union was full of love, admiration, and sacrifices, all of which they instilled in their children. Mae was blunt, stern and never bit her tongue. She was a strong, intelligent, and faithful woman that showed love to everyone. She was known for her gourmet style, down home southern cooking (all from scratch); and some of her specialties were: sweet potato pies, hamburgers and gravy, and ribs. Mae always stayed active in whatever she was involved in. She loved crocheting and would often be found crocheting beautiful dish cloths, blankets and hats for family members and friends. She also enjoyed doing crossword puzzles, watching horror films, and bingo. Mae volunteered at the Hospice of Dayton for about a year, and she volunteered for over one hundred and sixty-five hours. The Lord saw fit for Mae to have her final earthly residence at this very same Hospice. Many staff members and volunteers expressed their love and admiration by stating, “Mae was a very special volunteer.”
To know Mae was to love her, and she never met a stranger. She was known for her blunt, direct, and loving candor. If you were a stranger, co-worker, relative or one of her children- when you talked to Mae- you got the truth without wavering, whether you liked it or not. She was a strong, loving, and intelligent woman, who loved the Lord, her family, and her church. Mae was truly one of a kind!
