Lorraine Helen Perna, 66, passed away in her home Thursday surrounded by her family after a 2 year battle with cancer. She was born in Norristown, PA and lived in Huber Heights, Ohio for the last 30 years. Lorraine was a pillar of the community and a faculty member at Wayne High School where she started the Alternative Education Program and taught OWA and Business for nearly 3 decades.
She was as dedicated to her students as she was to her own children. Nothing made her happier than seeing the success of young people she came into contact with. Her passion for helping (and pushing) students to achieve their potential was matched only by her love of Tim Horton's coffee, a night out pulling the "slots", and her family….in that order.
Lorraine was an anchor for her family which includes her doting husband, Mark Besecker, her children, Giovanni F. Castro (Laura Young), Carmella Castro (Jessica Stickel), and Jonathan Besecker (Madeline Felipez); her grand-daughter Roxanne Helen Castro; and her sister, Gail Clark, her brother-in-law, Lewis Clark, II, and her nieces and nephews, Greg and Mary Beth Wiley, Gregory Wiley, Gabrielle Wiley, and Alyssa Wiley; Lewis Clark, III, Kathleen Clark, and Lewis Clark, IV; and Jim Castro. She was proceeded in death by her father John Anthony Perna, her mother Helen McGough, her brother John Perna, Jr., and her best friend, James R. Muntz.
These last two years were tough on Lorraine, but they were made easier with the love and support she received from the community, former students, fellow teachers, and friends. She fought this battle valiantly and would not have been able to make it as far as she did without the help of her friend Ann Ganson, who donated so much of her time and energy to make certain Lorraine was comfortable and taken care of.
She was an example for so many and to so many we are thankful for your love and support. A celebration to honor Lorraine's life will begin Friday, August 24th at 6:30 p.m. at the Wayne High School football game with a balloon release.
Saturday, August 25th at 11:00 a.m. a memorial service will be held at the Wayne Performing Arts Center next to the James Muntz Gymnasium.
