Lois Jeanette Hines

October 25, 1918 — December 3, 2019

Lois Jeanette Hines, age 101, died peacefully in her sleep December 3, 2019.
Lois was the eldest child of Walter and Mildred (nee Patton) Gorham, born at home on October 25, 1918 while her father was serving in the infantry in France. She was nearly a year old before he would see her for the first time. She married Charles R. Hines on July 19, 1941, Charles having chosen wisely between a new car or an engagement ring.

A native of Cleveland, Ohio she moved to Kettering, Ohio with her husband during World War ll. Separated from her family and friends she and Charles cultivated a new life centered around his career, a close circle of friends, their children, the church and community service. Lois was active in the incorporation of Van Buren Township into the City of Kettering, was a member of Fairmont Presbyterian Church and for many years prepared the floral arrangements for the sanctuary. She and Charles enjoyed taking their children on interesting and educational summer vacations across the United States and Canada instilling in them an attitude of curiosity and openness. She delighted in making miniature vignettes with the Dayton Miniature Society, volunteered in the Radiology Dept at Kettering Medical Center, and became involved with American Field Service as a host family for Susanne Wendler during the 1969-1970 school year. She loved to travel, go dancing, work in the garden, play bridge with friends, attend the symphony. She was a quilter and an excellent seamstress making most of her daughter's clothes much to her daughter's chagrin when she was a teenager. Lois devoted 20 years as a Docent for the Dayton Art Institute. She flourished in this atmosphere of personal study and guiding children to explore and enjoy art. After
Charles' retirement they traveled often with the Dayton Art Institute exploring museums all over the world.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Charles, and her brothers Raymond Gorham and Jay Gorham. She is survived by her son Jack and Nancy Hines (Dayton) and her daughter Linda and Wayne Springer (Westerville); granddaughters Tonya Hines and Chris Adams, Kelly Holliman, Carey and Mike Raines, Tracy and Mark Miller, a grandson Anthony and Suzy Springer; great granddaughters Brooke Buckingham, Jessica and Bryan Cramer, Micayla and Hannah Raines, Emily and Madeline Springer, and great grandsons Tyler Hines and Benjamin Springer; nieces and nephews Tod Gorham, Penny Obernyer, Terry Gorham, Kim Gorham Thibault, Robert "Dutch" Hines, Susan Schmidler, Judith Brown, Steven Hines, Ray, Bob, Karen and Keith Jurcago…all whom she loved dearly throughout her long life.

Her family expresses their sincere gratitude for the caregivers at Carlyle House and Hospice of Dayton. Thank you for your devotion to her and for making these last years as meaningful and comfortable as possible.

A Service of Witness to the Resurrection will be held at Fairmont Presbyterian Church (3705 Far Hills Ave, Kettering, Ohio) at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, December 18, 2019, Rev Kelley Wehmeyer Shin officiating. Interment following service at David's Cemetery.
