Leonard W. "Lenny" Crouch
Age 90 yrs. passed away peacefully at Heartland of Kettering on Jan. 25, 2012.
Lenny was born in Seward, Neb. Feb. 23, 1921 to William and Pauline (Rogge) Crouch.
After moving to Indiana, he graduated from Moores Hill HS in 1938, received his BA from Wright State Univ. and MA degree from Miami Univ. (Ohio). He served in the Army Air Corps from 1942-45 in the ETO of WWII where he was awarded the Bronze Star.
In 1946 he entered the Photo Lab at WPAFB, working under the legendary General George Goddard, whom he had served during the war.
As an aeronautical engineer, Lenny was involved in and associated with every national photo reconnaissance program since the early 1950's, including every type of image forming medium, until his retirement in 1994 after 52 total years of Federal service. Some of the most notable successes included the RF 101 through the U-2 and SR-71, as well as many other classified systems, and the Open Skies Arms Limitation Treaty Program. He developed many advances in the science of photo engineering. Lenny was a nationally recognized authority in all aspects of photo reconnaissance, and received commendations and awards too numerous to list.
To exemplify Lenny's dedication to his country, after reaching the mandatory retirement age of 72 years, he found an empty office and continued his work "under the radar" until he was reminded, that "mandatory retirement" is really mandatory retirement.
His hobbies included nature hikes, singing in the choir at Lutheran Church of Our Savior, and woodworking – multiple projects large & small can be found in his family's homes.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Leona, wives Marcille (Young) & Roberta (Spencer-Schoen).
He is survived by his children Larry (Monica) & grandson Dean, Jim (Joyce) & grandson Jon, John (Felicia) & grandchildren Ryan & Molly, Ellen Winland, grandson Ean Von Scheerschmidt (Nicole), great grandson Evan & granddaughter Alexis Winland.
