Leona Ruth Porter

June 6, 1924 — July 26, 2019

Leona "Lee" Ruth Porter, a resident of Dayton for over 65 years, passed away peacefully in Dayton, OH on Friday, July 26, 2019. Born June 9th, 1924 in Plummers Landing, Kentucky, she was the daughter of Thomas Wilson and Lottie Lee (nee Cooper) Harris and the second of their four children.

Lottie died when Leona was just 5 years old. Raised by her father, she learned to cook at his knee while caring for her siblings. She went on to finish her education at Morehead State College. Leona married Samuel Nolan Porter in January of 1944. When he went overseas to fight in the Battle of the Bulge, she took a job teaching grades 1-8 in the one room school house up Sharky's Ridge.

Upon Sam's return from the war, Leona became a farmer's wife. Sadly, she and Sam lost their first born son shortly after birth. They welcomed son Michael Nolan and daughter Sandra Lee before moving to Dayton where their third child, Thomas Walter was born.

Leona was a founding member of Community United Methodist Church in Dayton. A "Stay at Home Mom" until her youngest started high school, she went to work for Rike's (Federated Department Stores) from which she retired after 20+ years.

Lee and Sam enjoyed several road trips until his death in 1989. She enjoyed cooking for her family, became very active in several church groups and traveled to her daughter's homes in Canada and Florida. She was kind and thoughtful; loving and generous.

Leona will be dearly missed by her children, Michael (Pat) of Clayton, OH, Sandra (Jim) Yount of Bellbrook, OH and Thomas (Ann) of Beverly Hills, FL; grandchildren, Kelly, Penny, Jeff, Kara and Kasey; 22 great grandchildren and 9 great great grandchildren; several nieces, nephews and extended family. In addition to her husband Sam, she was preceded in death by her siblings, Iolene Conn, Nina Newman, Willie Harris and her grandson, Michael Allen Porter.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions can be made to Hospice of Dayton (Ohio's Hospice), 324 Wilmington Avenue, Dayton, OH 45420, Community United Methodist Church, 339 Meyer Ave, Dayton, OH 45431 or Shiloh United Methodist Church, KY-32, Plummers Landing, KY 41081.

Visitation will be held on Thursday, August 1, 2019 from 1:00 to 2:00 pm at Newcomer Cremations, Funerals & Receptions - Beavercreek Chapel, 3380 Dayton-Xenia Rd., Beavercreek, Ohio 45432. Funeral Services will follow the visitation at 2:00 pm at the funeral home. Burial will take place in Muse's Mill, Kentucky at the Muse Family Cemetery on Friday, August 2, 2019 at 1:00 pm.
