Leon Jennings

November 28, 1930 — March 1, 2013

JENNINGS, Leon, of Huber Heights was called to join his Lord and Savior on March 1, 2013 at the age of 82. Leon was born on November 28, 1930 in Blue Diamond, Kentucky to the late Ova and Myrtle (Campbell) Jennings.

He married his loving wife, Darlene (Boatman) on April 28, 1979 and she survives. Also surviving are daughters Deb Grogean, Dinah (Bruce) Luneke and sons Phillip and Larry (Amber), brothers Harold (Pat) Jennings, Jim (Sharon) Jennings, sisters Louise (Hilary) Hoskins, Judy (Tom) Allen, 10 grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, beloved friends and in-laws Floyd and Gaylen (Kittrell) Kirkland, Rose (Phil) Barber-Dell.

He was preceded in death by his wife of over 26 years, Joyce (Kittrell) Jennings, his parents, grandson Rob Grogean and many other dear members of his family.

Leon came to Dayton at age 16 and worked for 37 years at McCalls until they closed and then worked at Nielson, in Cincinnati until retirement in 1995. A devoted Christian, he became an Ordained Minister later in life and loved teaching and celebrating his faith each day. Also a skilled carpenter, he continued working on projects into his 80s.

As a man who cherished his heritage, he wrote a book about his childhood memories growing up in Blue Diamond, Kentucky, coal camp. He had a wonderful smile, great sense of humor and would break out into song at the drop of a hat. No one will forget the wonderful imaginative stories he told about his childhood and some of his elaborate practical jokes.

He loved the outdoors and his hobbies included fishing, hunting, watching sports and sitting on his front porch enjoying people and nature. Nothing gave him more joy than spending time with his family, church family, and many friends. He never met a stranger and was always there to help when needed.

The family would like to extend a special thank you to Vitas Hospice Care and to all who shared a place in Leon's life. His passion for the Lord and his enjoyment of life will be missed by all who knew him.

Pastor Gary Peterson officiating.

Leon will be laid to rest in Arlington Cemetery in Brookville, Ohio.
